What of these tang combinations are realistic for my 500 litre tank? Blue hippo, yellow, kole- sailfin, purple, powder blue and maybe a kole- purple, hippo, powder blue and sailfin? Or what would you do?

Hi, Damien - and welcome!
I'm no tang expert, and not too sure of the liters/gallons conversion - I think you're at about 130 gallons or so?, but I'm told that it's easiest to keep tangs of different genera together. So hippo/yellow/kole ought to work well enough, but sailfin/powderblue/purple might be more difficult, due to both the sailfin and purple being members of the Zebrasoma genus. (The sailfins get pretty big all by themselves, something to keep in mind.)
I'm looking at stocking a 220 gallon tank, and already have a kole, (Ctenochaetus) so I'm giving some thought to adding a powderblue (Acanthurus) and maybe a purple (Zebrasoma). Keeping tangs of the same genus - even the same species - in a tank can certainly be done ... but may require some rather cautious introductions.

I think I may just go with the blue hippo, yellow and kole?

You should be OK with that mix but regals grow very large and will feel cramped in that volume longterm.

IMO, the Sailfin, Hippo, Powder Blue should not go into that tank. You may be able to get away with a Kole and a Purple, but not a 4ft tank. If the tank is 5ft or longer, I think you could do the Kole and Purple. I only have 4 in my 8ft 240.

I will be upgrading within a year to a 265 gallon tank

Then it would be better to wait until you definitely have the space. Often things get in the way of upgrades and it's better to stock the tank you have rather than the one you want.

If it's the standard 125, it is 6 feet. That said most of those fish still couldn't go in alone even.
