Tank at Children's Hospital

Has anyone else seen the tank in the suregery waiting room at Children's Hospital? It looks really bad in my opinion. It is always dirty and the acrylic looks like it was cleaned with sand paper it's so scratched. I have a Special Needs son so we are at Children's on a regular basis so it wasn't a one time thing.

I've never seen it. Do you have any idea about who takes care of it? Just thinking outside the box, but every club (just about) has a philanthropy. Maybe members from the club could help out and turn the tank around?

I'd be willing to help out. Don't know if your intentions were to enlist help to restore the tank via this thread, however, its a great idea either way. Anything for the kids.

I think this is a great idea, let me know how we make this happen. Count me and the club in on any help. Someone should contact the childrens hospital to see what they would let us do.

My wife is a Echo Cardiologist at Childrens hostpital. The tanks there are all maintained by Reeftectonics. If I remember right I think that there are a total of 5 or 6 tanks there. When I used to help him at the store, I was on him all the time about the tanks at Childrens. His answer was always the same they don't pay him enough to clean and maintain them properly. You should have seen the tank in the Cardio dept. I has a huge scratch right in the middle of the tank. I tried to get him to replace the tank even offering to purchase a new acrylic tank and skimmer and lighting for the hospital myself. But he never seemed interested in keeping them nice. My wife was always telling me that the kids always ask why the tanks are so dark or why the fish are sick.

Blackcows is going to contact the hospital and see if they are interested in our help. Depending on what they say I think we should discuss it at the Steven Pro meeting. To me it sounds like a great way to get our club name out and maybe make some kids smile.

I did contact them this afternoon and will PM you a number in just a few minutes. It sounds like they aren't very pleased with the service that they are getting either. In fact the lady that I first spoke with to find out who I should talk with said "yes that tank does look awful".

As for the current service company you would think that instead of taking a job that you knew you couldn't perform well you would turn it down rather than taking the job and just doing a poor job becuase that is all you were getting paid to do. It doesn't sound like a very responsible way to care for the animals.

I know some people at Children's. Let me know if you need another volunteer or edge in getting us in. We could also get a "Omaha marine society" placard put on each tank I think.

I am not from Omaha, but I think the idea you guys have is great. If everything goes as planned for you all, I commend you on your giving to people on of there worst days, and making them seem a little brighter.

God bless

This is great way for our club to some good, I would think that the hospital would welcome a little better care for their tanks. They obviously put them in to provide some therapy and relaxation for the patients as they wait and its a shame that they look poorly. Lets make sure if we can set this up that we get organized and set up a volunteering schedule. Its important that we do good job if we put our club name on this project.

Reeftectonics has been taking care of the tanks there for over 5 years. It has just been in the last year or so that they have really fallen off. I am not sure what happend as I have no contact with the owner of Reeftectonics anymore. You guys also have to understand that the hospital puts very little money towards the tanks for maintenance. That was the problem with replacing a couple of the tanks that really need replaced. The hospital didn't want to come up with any money at all above the maintenance fees. I am going to say that unless you plan on doing this completely for free you won't get very far with the hospital.

That explains a lot... the owner is a jerk.
I've heard that Dave now works for him... too bad.

how awful is that, Sick fish.......that's the last thing a sick kid wants too see....

If there is a fund started, I would love to donate some moneys for salts, chems, un-sick fish...etc.. let me know.

I got a chance to talk to Dave about a week ago and he does work for reeftectonics.

Thats the whole idea, the club will take care of the tanks as a charity so to speak. I'm sure there are a lot of details that need to be worked out, but I still think this is a good thing for the club to do.
