tank crash, so frustrating..

hey all,

sitting here at work in a meeting looking at what was the 20 gallon tank.. crashed over the winter holiday, had the tank setup to last 2 weeks but it seems the heater broke and when i got back the temp was around 50 degrees in the tank. all the fish/shrimp died, including a nice tail spot blenny that was a favorite. most of the corals are totally bleached or slimed away, though maybe a few mushrooms and polyps may make it..

finally got a chance to get in sunday afternoon when the janitors were around to clean up everything (smelled really bad, but the week back from the holidays was so busy i didn't have time..). a couple kids came it to help me out. frustrating because my old vp let me borrow a schoolkey to get in during the big holidays to check up on all my animals, but with all the administrative turnover the new vp/adm didn't allow us access so i tried to setup all the animals for the winter break but two weeks is a long time.

not sure if i'm going to resetup the tank right now, as i'm thinking ahead to summer vacation. i may have to take down all my animal setups for the summer if i can't get in the building again, but moving an aquarium just to move again in three months in the fall may be too much in addition to everything else i need to do at the end of each schoolyear. yeah, teaching is getting more frustrating with more 'accountability' standards (read testing and paperwork..) and hoops for teachers to jump through while funding still isn't where it should be.. all the while people expect schools to solve everything..

okay, enough venting.. i guess on the up side life isn't that bad other than that and i finally got a chance to prune back my planted freshwater tank and finally got the rbta in my home tank off a rock (getting a bit big for its spot and my percs wouldn't host..), so free plant prunings if folks want and an rbta i'll post for sale soon..

yeah, just kinda sad and frustrating for me and the kids about the tank, the tail-spot blenny and cleaner shrimp were their favorites..

Sorry to hear about the crash. Dead coral don't smell good at all... Let me know if it the tank gets started again.

hey amg, thanks man.. sorry i didn't get a chance to hook up with you over the holidays, i was busy with extended family in town and was hoping to get one of the toadstools out of the class tank when i got back in (things were growing in nicely too)..

but still have your other toadstool in a friends tank though, so i'll try to drive it by when i get a chance (hopefully in the next couple weeks, but its really busy right now..). yeah, not sure when/if i'm resetting up the class tank just yet, i'll see what happens.

thanks for the offer funguy, i'll see what i decide, right now i'm just going think about it.

and yeah, dead corals, fish, etc. don't smell good at all. but working with all the windows open in this weather gets cold too..

Hey Otter,
Let me know if you need some softy frags. I have some GSP, tyree green polyp toadstool, pulsing sinularia and some other odds and ends you can have for that tank. BTW, what school in Oakland?

thanks for the condolences and offers, still not sure how to deal with moving all my animals as it is this summer so resetting up the tank is up in the air..

solitary, hope you don't mind if i don't mention the school name right now, right after kinda coming down on my vp. its just a while back on another forum something i posted came back around so i'm a little more careful now. hope you understand..
