I'm sooo sorry to hear of your loss. I feel your pain. I hope you get back up and running soon and if I can help at all let me know.
 
The gfci would be a quick test to see which one is leaking current as it would trip when plugged in while in water. A megger uses millivolts to send a current thru the device and measures the loss. A regular multimeter does have an ohm setting and could be used but if you don't the impedance of the pump it would be hard to note which one has the problem unless it just didn't read anything.

Aww man that sucks sorry about your loss. Let me know when you are up and running full speed ahead I have some corals I could frag as well to get you jump started. No cost of course.
 
i have your nems and will be willing to frag a bunch of stuff from the 120g and 90g for ya when you are ready for them.
 
I just built a GFCI outlet with a switch. Thanks for the help and kind offers everybody. Finally got my skimmer back online. did a 70% water change. Another big one tomorrow. I will update more tomorrow.
 
Another fun day of cleaning the tank. Scrubbed all rock by hand and rinsed it in saltwater. At the same time of doing another 50% water change. The stench my god, it smelled like Charlotte Beach.
 
Its really depressing me. I cant believe how attached i was to all of the inhabitants in my tank. Now as i take a step back i want to reevaluate the direction of my next reef. Such is life.
 
Man it really sucks but keep your head up. It's not like you did anything wrong. If anything it makes me think about the age of my power heads and the fact that they do not last forever. What are you thinking as far a your new reef direction?
 
Jason, do you have any idea how old your MJ 1200 was? I'm wondering if it would be paranoid to replace these now and then. What do you think?
 
Less then a year or two max. I think mine was a lemon. All it did was circulate my sump to prevent detritus from settling.
 
I had an mj 1200 go about a month ago. The gfci kept tripping. I isolated the pump; removed it a put it in a bucket of water to check it. Oops plugged it into a non gfci outlet. It started and stopped in about 2 seconds. Reached in to get it,ouch . After a nasty buzz,it was finally clear to me that the powerhead was bad. I looked it over and found a small crack on the inside top plate which was obviously compromising the seal.
