Hello

I recently inherited a buddy of mines saltwater tank. 55galon with a bunch of love rock 2 clown fish a blue tang and a starfish. Recently there was a "mishap" where someone put about a cup full of soap in my tank. The tank started bubbling up foam I turned it off. All the fish obviously died. I just drained the tank and did 2 water exchanges with just tap water in an attempt to get rid of most of the soap. I would like to restart my tank. My questions are..

Is all that live rock useless now? Can I treat it and reuse it?
What about the sand bed ?
I'm really not sure if anything is salvageable or should I start from empty and throw it all out.

Also wondering if the soap messed up my protein skimmer.

Thanks for the help

The rock will be ok after a soaking and some rinsing. Sand should just be purchased new. The skimmer will be fine

Is it ok to soak it in tap water and then put them back into the tank and fill it with the r/o water and mix in salt?

i perfer to mix the salt water in a trash can before i put it in the tank, if u don't mind me asking how did a cup of soap end up in ur tank?

I would use a hose to squirt of the rock as well, to make sure you get rid of all the soap. I had a shop years ago and a customer wanted to sell me a 4 inch damsel and I told him I couldn't sell one that big. The next time he came in, a friend of mine told me, he threw a soap tablet into one of my tanks that was hooked up to a system of 7 more tanks. It wiped me out of a lot of fish....

HOse it off with tapwater as fast as you can, until absolutely no suds, then put it in circulating warm saltwater to soak for a number of weeks. Understand, the surface of the rock may have died. The interior will still be alive, because it just takes time to get to the heart of the rock.
