Tank height

In the planning stages of a plywood tank and I was wondering, is 36 inches TOO tall? I am not to worried about trying to reach the bottom. But is it going to be too difficult to get light penetration? It will be mixed reef. With SPS closer to the top, less than 24 inches from the surface, then LPS lower down, bubble tip anemone. I am planning on using LED aswell.

Look at threads like nineball's and Chingchai's to see what is working and what is not lamp-wise. Height is only restricted by your wallet, your ceiling and by what your personal motivators are with the hobby. Some here choke at 24" high because they can't reach the bottom if the tank is any deeper, whereas others are just as happy using tongs on 48" deep. It's really about what suits you personally. Is it it more important that the tank look good (tall) or is it more important that you can easily get your hands in the tank constantly (short)? Everybody has their own driving needs that makes this hobby what it is for them.

I agree with the above poster. I have a 30" tall tank and have no problems reaching the bottom. I think as long as you have a catwalk or something of that nature to make it easy to stand and be able to fully bend over you will have no problems. As for the lighting, If you can afford the best you will have no problems.
