Tank in Home Theatre / Music Room

Will listening to a movie or playing music at occasionally moderate to high volumes (spl) be detrimental to a mixed reef tank?
What about practicing drums to music, although possibly not in the same room.

Depends on if you are good or not:))))
Fish feel vibrations. The stress might be too great.

Good one! Insert rimshot/kick/splash here.
I was really more concerned with sound pressure levels and frequencies transmitted through the glass into the tank.

You may want to think about the reverse. Aquariums aren't completely silent and will that disturb your movie watching.

If you play at the right frequency, you can actually cause vibrations in the glass and shatter the entire tank.

I doubt there are any percussion instruments, including piano, that could produce those freq's, or sustain those freq's, in amplitude or sustain, to break glass. Sound pressure level is my concern.

Good point. I have thought that there is a certain amount of ambient noise introduced into the tank by all of the equipment. If I put the tank in the basement I "could" have a remote sump. Basement is unfinished currently.

Drum kit will likely NOT be n the same room as tank.
It is not like we will be watching movies at 110db, music on the other hand could reach fairly high db levels for short amounts of time.

yes noise/vibrations can effect all marine organisms leading to behavioral changes,etc....

To what extent your specific case will have is very difficult if not impossible to quantify..

Interesting reads, ok I did not read every single word. I will re-visit those articles.
My concern is the OCCASIONAL cranking up of The Who, Rush, Zeppelin, Zappa, Weather Report, King Crimson, etc.... . My wife and daughter will probably be annoyed, in the short term, so it not like an entire album would be played at "11".

FWIW... I quite often am rocking out around my fish tank..
If they are permanently damaged by that I wouldn't know it..

Now I once got a cease and desist letter from my Kole tang when that silly Justin Bieber/spanish song was accidentally allowed to play for longer than 10 seconds as I was running full steam to flip to the next song..

ftfy (fixed That For You - I'm a drummer as well)... :)

I have my tank sitting right next to my rather robust stereo system that may, on occasion, get cranked up louder than many people would consider to be at a comfortable listening level (others would consider it just right) and have never had any adverse effects on either my tank or any of its inhabitants...

I'm glad I happened onto this thread..

1.... Because I was wondering the same thing about my darling husband and his Mesa amplifier possibly disturbing the tank. There will be no stopping the awesomeness that comes from those heavy metal fingers (lol)

2. It is highly entertaining. I almost feel at if I just listened to music at a high volume and watched a movie all at once. Kudos.

MurphyLong....HMFIC..LOL. Former Military?

Yeah, prior Army, and work on MCB Camp Lejeune now. "HMFIC Customs" is something I started for Android-based Mustang stereos with CANBUS integration. First thing that came to mind when I was filling out my business license info.

Remember those commercials in the 70s where the female opera singer would shatter a glass with her voice? She would be dangerous to have over for dinner if you had a reef tank lol
