Tank Limitations????

Ive been wanting to set up a decent size fish system for a while, i am enjoying my nano, but the only draw back is the lack of fish i can have in it so i wanted to know if i set-up a 120 (48*24*24) what limitations would i have with fish? i know the main draw back is it being 4ft and not 6ft but the extra width has to account for something. i know all really active large tangs would be out but say if i wanted to keep one large angel like a blueface or an emporer would that be ok?

Any help would be great.

No blueface or emp IMO. If you like that look of angel, how bout a majestic?

Also if you can find a healthy rock beauty that would be a nice fish!

Most of the Apolemichthys genus or a regal should be fine, along with some of the smaller Chaetodontoplus and Genicanthus. Centropyge is always a great choice too and I would probably combine them with some of the other angels.

Have you looked into any of the butterflyfish?

So basically the only way i could have a blueface or emp is to have a 6ft tank? im glad im gonna iron this out before i buy the tank. i guess if i had to i could buy a 125 instead
(72*18*22) the only problem with the 125 is the dual overflows, it makes plumbing more complicated.

I don't think a 125 is big enough IMO, but it would do for a while. A 180 would be my min. but everyone has their opinion. These fish get big and with only 18" tall and 18" wide a 12" fish or bigger potentially just doesn't look right to me.

Are you really that fixated on those two species, if so I suggest you get the biggest tank possible. If you have room for a 6 foot tank, why not one of those marineland deep dimension 300 gallon tanks?

There are plenty of cool angels that can be kept in a 4 foot 120 though.

yea i mean im only in highschool so a 300 gallon tank would be too much. i guess im gonna stick with the 120 and forget the large angel species.

I didn't know how old you were, but its cool. You can do some large angels in the 120 just not ones that get huge. I don't know if you are familiar with all the different angels I mentioned but check 'em out I'm sure you will like some of them, there are quite a few species and most of them aren't ones that get too big for a 120.

as for tank shape, i have a 100 gal "wide" (48 x 24 x 20), and i love it. i do agree, however, that it's too short for large angels. you will, however, really like the aquascaping possibilities of the 24" width it's really great.

our tank is a setup for a full-grown volitans and two Rhinopias scorps, so "pacing" room isn't an issue.

medium angels would be a good choice tho if you want to keep angels.

yea i agree the extra width is great. i am definitly going to look into some smaller angels, its ashame goldflakes and bandits are so expensive.

I would not get one of the pomacanthus angels like Queen, French, or half-moon, but a small blueface or majestic will do well in a 48" 24x24 tank for a long time.

how long do u think it would take a blue face to out grow a 120?

First of all queen's are Holacanthus, and second blueface get just as big as emperors. Sure they are closely related to majestics but their sizes are totally different.

Depends fish usually grow slower in smaller tanks, and then you end up with stunted fish, so technically it could never outgrow it, but its not in the fishes best interest.
