i was wondering what give off the loudest noise in your room when your trying to sleep? i have a skimmer thats pretty loud

haha, you guys are funny.

for me i'd say the drains and the fans are the loudest for me. My tank if really loud but i dont care and neither does my family. It's in the fish room.

Definatley the fans are loud as hell!

My Return OC3500 dead silent! Its just those damn fans...

I ended up mounting acoustic foam behind my tank and inside my sump cabinet to cut down on noise. I would say it helps quite a bit!

I'll post some pics later.

I have some extra if anybody's interested (probably only good for a 40g tank or smaller)

I second that. But I pay it so-what.

Saying "so what" would solve my problem.
I'd rather she pay it anyway and it's worth the background "noise", that leaves ME more discretionary income.

BTW... overflows, but it's in a back room of my shop so it doesn't really matter. When the tank was in our livingroom the ciller would win hands down.

Mine is silent. If I open the doors of the stand I can hear the skimmer sucking in air.

I will probably get a chiller soon, so I'm sure after that my tank will no longer be silent.

i want to get a in sump skimmer but would it be extra loud for the water to come out? cuz im thinking about putting some of those acoustic foam NaughtyCashew is talking about.

Main pump.

Fans.

Skimmer.

Overflow is damnear silent. Made me a stockman-like cap and it's super quiet.

I like the one with the wife complaining about the electric bill. I can totally relate to that. All I have to do, though, is bring up one of her hay and/or vet bills... That ALMOST shuts her up.

Almost...

More than one way to skin that cat...

I put a sponge the goes from right under the discharge and sits wedged between the pump and the discharge. It stays there and there is zero noise from the water being returned to the sump. The water goes into the sponge and then silently into the sump.

Piece 'o cake...

Just wanted to share how I quieted down my tank a bit. I used acoustic foam behind the tank and inside the cabinet. It worked quite well, and my wife complains about tank noises much less :)
