Tank-O-death

Thanks again everyone for your kind sentiments. Perhaps tomorrow, I will post a few pics of my first pass at an updated aquascaping. I'm trying to spread the canyon a bit wider....but also add a few pillars that break the surface. It's interesting....but, I'm not sure that I like it yet.....it's so barren....and I have to envision future corals on those rocks. The old aquascaping was just a pile of rocks on the right and on the left....it was the corals that made things pop.....it's alot harder to elicit the same emotional response from just rocks. I did add a few test sps though.

Way to fight throught it my man! You are an inspiration to us all. Can't wait for the pics to see the genius you've come up with this time. ;)

Gday Steve,

Yet another in shock over your loss. When you do redo your set up can you post any safe guards that you add to your system, for everyones benefit. Im a newbie, and a big fan of your system, your website is in my favs list :D I plan on building myself a 500gallon tank in the future and, sorry to say, learn from your mistakes, to hopefully not do the same myself.

Ive seen a little on your temperate collection as well, truely inspiring, I plan to do alot more research on these systems especially since I live in Australia, it should be alot cheaper to get good livestock.

Good luck with the rebuild, I like many others will be keen to see your new set up ;) :)

OK...here are a few pics of the redo....which, by no means, is a final thing....only a first pass. My goal is the create more swimming space through a wider canyon. I also want to go more vertical with pillars to accomodate more tables and stags....something my old layout could not do. I know it is a shadow of its former self....but...there are few corals and lots of rocks...so it can't help but look uninspiring right now....the trick is to envision all the future corals covering all the rocks. The photography is poor since I just did a water change....so....the water isn't its clearest....and I wasn't trying take perfect pics....just some quick snaps. Unfortuneatly, quite a bit of the detail is lost in the pics....but, it gives you an idea....

It looks like everything that made it is happy once again. It still looks really nice based on layout etc.....I'm sure it will be stunning again before you know it:)
Thanks for the update.
Chris

thanks for pic's update, also did the boxfish made it through the disaster..and was there any upgrades made prior to the original system.

That looks a lot better than I expected based on the heavy losses you described. Your RBTAs look happy, and I'm curious how large that Goniopora is, and how often did you feed those suncorals? They look very healthy and have spread significantly.

One thing I don't see in the pics is the giant clam. Did you lose that too? I mean, it can't be hiding right?

There are no boxfish in my warm water reef....all my boxes are doing just fine in my cold water reef.

About a month ago, I got an offer that I couldn't refuse.....besides, he was getting so large that he was out of scale with everything else...so, I sold him. He is still in Upscales' tank awaiting pickup.

That goniopora is close to 18" in diameter....I've had him for five years now. He started out the size of a golfball. I decided to bring him forward since there's not much else to look at right now.....his usual spot was at the rear. As for losses....all sps (with the exception of 3 small colonies....a stylo, poccilopora, and a denae)....also lost...all but a few rics, all xenia, a couple of LPS...but most came through OK. The suncorals get fed every 3rd day. They provide a bright spot to a low light area that I can't grow much else.

Looks awesome so far, Steve. I was envisioning blood and guts from the descriptions and posts. The tank looks unbelievably healthy all things considered. I'm digging the rock structures breaking the water surface too. :)

Well that's good news. Having a clam that size kick off would really add to your problem. Um...how did you get it out??? That could not have been easy!

Looking good Steve...funny thing is your tank post disaster still looks better than most captive reefs! :)
Ain't that the truth!

Although he was about 30lbs....he wasn't too hard to get out. He didn't fit into a 5 gallon bucket....so, I had to use my large collection cooler to transport him. I was really glad that I found someone who was looking for a monster clam.....afterall, I was having a tough time choosing between Manhatten or New England style clam chowder.

No kidding. Not hard to get to release? Can you say where it's going?
Gigas lose their Byssus threads early, so all he had to do is pick it up and heave it out.
