tank problems

My fish dont leave any of the cube and they eat it in under a min. They are agressive eaters also i have a few cleaner shrimp that eat any leftovers.
There are no adjustments i can make on the skimmer. there are always bubbles just it either brings water with it so that it overflows in a min or the bubbles dont reach the top.

That seems very odd. Having it overflow in less than a minute means it is definitely not working at all. If there are only two settings; having it over flow or having the bubbles not reach the top I would leave it where the bubbles don't reach the top, sometimes it may take a day or two for the foam head to properly develop. Has it ever worked properly? If not sounds like it is defective or not set up correctly.

Also is the berlin i was sold actually doing anything because all it is, is a sock and a sump.

Typically a sump allows for the reefer to add to the tanks total water volume (increased water volume = greater stability), hide equipment like skimmers and heaters in the sump, and it also can be divided and semi converted into a refugium where beneficial algae (chaeto) and pods can grow unharassed.

As for the filter sock, these are mechanical filters that help remove particles from the water column, unless you frequently clean these sock filters, they have a tendency to build up "particles" and increase you nitrates, which in turn increases the food for unwanted nuisance algaes.

If your skimmer cup is filling with water and completely in under a minute it is safe to say it is not working at all. I wouldn't even have it on until I got it working properly. But the skimmer is an integral part of filtration and will really benefit your tank.

Bio load seems good I wouldn't add many if any more fish.

Whenever I feed mysis I always dissolve the block in RODI water then pass the melted food through a small hand held strainer. I then finally rinse the food that has caught in the strainer with some more RODI water and then feed slowly to my fish. This process helps remove many excess nutrients that would otherwise enter your water column.

ok i just read this whole thread. hit post has some high's and some low's
first the high's. that is a great way to feed frozon the only other way not to add everything that frozon food comes with. ok now the lows "Bio load seems good I wouldn't add many if any more fish." no thats wrong. tanks eat are pigs they eat a ton. and thats a hippo tank that thing needs an 8 foot tank. even small. that NEEDS to be removed today.
you guys have given some good and some bad advise. 1 cube is way too much. you shold go though 2 cubs mabey 3 becuse of the tang a week. feed every other 2 days until the tnag is gone then go to 4 or 5 days between feddings untill everything stableizes. also dont add any chemicals to the tank ever. even chemi-clean. thats what one of you were talking about to remove the cyno(red slime) the are just a few things to change their are move but do that to start. sorry guys i dont mean to undertow you guys but with only a few post somethings could be qustioned

my filter. I feel that I have been sold equipment buy the fish store that is inadequet. Since I have live rock they said i dont need a wet/dry and in stead a berlin filter. Which consists of only a sock for filtration and an open area (sump) for the protein skimmer.

no thats good. i would mabey add a small 10 gallon tank to be used as a fuge were you can grow cheto.( it will grow and tank all the food for the algae)

unless you have an 8 foot tank ready within a few months
im sorry i dont need to be mean or anything but im just in the tank police:blown: i dont know it just bothers me to see tanks like that

No need to apologize we are all here to help one another out :)

You are right about the hippo tang; just checked live aquaria and they recommend a minimum of 125 gallons. So yes this fish should not be in your 55G.

I didn't mention how often you should feed because I only feed 1 block 1-2x max per week and many people here will claim I am under feeding the fish. But my 10 year old clown and 4 year old bangaiis seems to think otherwise. lol.

hahah

why did the fish store tell me it was ok?

Pretty simple answer: Profit.

Your best bet is not to trust most fish stores, ever. Eventually, with lots of research you will become more confident and informed, upon which time you will be able to gauge the honesty of your LFS stores and hopefully you find one you can trust and consult with.

I agree. I dont even go to that one anymore. Im just frustrated because I have had the problems from the start. Spent a lot of money and I am being told that everything that I was told by that store is crap.

Don't be discouraged, many people often get into this hobby and trust their LFS just like you. Bottom line is you have found a great resource (this forum) and your best bet is to do lots of reading on these boards and never make any future decisions hastily.

In general can one of you or both list what I should do or tell me if I should just restart. I'm considering a larger tank. Need advice.

Have you tested for Phosphates ? You said you have live rock . Can you tell us about your live rock.if you know the history of it. Can you go thru the stages of your tank set up in the beginning like what went in and when. If you can post some pictures, That sometimes helps get a better understanding of what we are dealing with.
