tank problems

you guys have given some good and some bad advise. 1 cube is way too much. you shold go though 2 cubs mabey 3 becuse of the tang a week. feed every other 2 days until the tnag is gone then go to 4 or 5 days between feddings untill everything stableizes. also dont add any chemicals to the tank ever. even chemi-clean. thats what one of you were talking about to remove the cyno(red slime) the are just a few things to change their are move but do that to start. sorry guys i dont mean to undertow you guys but with only a few post somethings could be qustioned

You are absolutely correct about feeding less.

Now, about the adding chemicals, i wasnt suggesting doing it, i was just trying to explore the options that are available out there. That stuff does work but just like I said, it doesnt fix the problem but simply covers it.

Yeah, the hippo tang gotta go, i didnt even notice it :frog:

no i wouldent restart their are a million paths to tank to solve everything. first sell ur hippo tnag. second buy an RODI unit. we forgot to ask before were is ur water coming from, tap, RODI from LFS then figer out what is fuleing ur algae. thats what you should do to start

ya the thing about the slime remover was more tords him. more things can go wrong then right in my opinion:frog: haha they need a police car for the tank police

How much flow are putting through the tank? You might be able to get rid of most of the algae just by increasing the flow

ok so the water you have is probaly load with phosphates and nitries. so u must buy ur own RODI unit try
air, water, ice. i think thats the companys name that mine is from and its great

again using advice from the store. I have one perpeller type powerhead(not sure of the specs or brand) and the return from the filter. I was told that that was enough

o no that not enough you will need many power heads
whats the GHP of the one you have. you want about a 30 to 40 turnover rate

In general can one of you or both list what I should do or tell me if I should just restart. I'm considering a larger tank. Need advice.

There is way to much information to post but I will try and give you some guidelines.

Step 1: Read, read and read some more. If you are wondering about what fish to buy look it up online check minimum gallon requirements, dietary needs, sensitivity and compatibility with other livestock.

Step 2: after reading about all the various livestock, equipment and how it all works, you will need to decide what type of livestock you wish to keep.

-Typically as a beginner I would say you are going to want to stick with soft corals; particularly mushrooms, leathers zoanthids, green star polyps and the like. However in my opinion you are a substantial time frame away from being able to keep corals (don't be discouraged but look at this as a learning process)

Step 3: make your purchases wisely, tank size (bigger is better but remember bigger = more $$ and more physical work) lighting is crucial to corals, the different types you purchases will require different types of lighting or at least different placement.

Step 4: be patient don't stress and do more research.

This is what I would do if I were you and did not want to start over:

- A skimmer is an essential part of the aquarium you will want a good one and one that works (stay far away from seaclone).

If I were you I would A: get rid of the tang, B: not purchase any additional livestock, C: combat the algae on all fronts: increase flow, increase water changes, using RODI water only (unless you have dinoflagellates which it doesn't sound like you do), get a GFO and carbon reactor from bulk reef supply (they have a dual reactor), watch what I feed and how I feed the livestock, get rid of the filter sock unless you clean it at least 1x per week, also perform a 3 day lights out where you keep your lights off for 3 days and try to minimize and indirect ambient light from entering the tank. This will really help kill off the algae.

What do you all think about phosban reactors have herd about these for removing phosphates in water. Will this help with algae?

could you possibly find a picture on google of a similar powerhead that you have? in my 55 i have 2 korallia evolution 750 gph (gallons per hour) plus the return from the sump.

+1
I also got my RODI from air water ice; really good bang for your buck if you ask me.

I already have a protein skimmer and light adequet for corals. Also how can i turn off the lights in the aquarium if I have corals.

very good info here execpt i wouldent try any corals for a while like 6 to 8 months from now.
also im going to quote this

yes becuse of ur LFS and their is way to much info to put onto one thread that why you have to read.

what is your light would whould probaly need MH lights if you have the standered 55
also i wouldent add anycorals for a few months like i said in my last post

your corals will be ok without light for a day or two, but no light will make some of the algae die off.

how about that powerhead picture?

as fas as i know the phosban reactor is the same thing as the GFO reactor that the bulk reef supply sells. they both perform the same task
