Tank question

I have noticed that some of the people on Reef Central have large tanks with one large intake. Instead of having 2 one inch intake, they might have customized a 2 or 2.5 intake.

How do you feel about having one intake vs. two intakes, especially if it is the same amount of water flowing to the sump.

Does this create any disadvantages if the intake is only pulling water from one side of the tank?

Would you buy or specifically not buy a tank (say 125 gal or more) with one intake of 2 or 2.5 inches?

Thanks...

A 2" will handle more water then two 1" , I feel that having two intakes that by them selves can handle the tank volume, is always a good Idea, just in case some freak thing happens and blocks one them, the other will still work and possibly avoiding a flood.

ok thanks olemos....avoiding floods key!

so would you or anyone else reading this post specifically not buy a tank that only has one intake?

thanks

nope, it wouldnt scare me away. just make sure you put a screen on it somehow to keep out big turbos (and make sure your prized fairy wrasse doesnt end up living in the overflow.

just use the gutter gaurd over the over flow. i found my lawn mower blenny in there last week. one is fine just do a monthly maintence of checking it if you use an over flow box instead of being reef ready.

Thanks!

In uhm, causual 'perusing', I have noticed a few tanks available with one large intake...

I hate to even admit this, but I have been considering an upgrade from my 125 for want of more sea floor space. The thought of moving everything etc....aside from the cost may make sure it doesn't happen.

We all know even a good deal is costly....(oh look a sign for free kittens.....what do you mean vaccinations?)

Afterall....no matter what we have and as long as space allows...isn't the idea of an upgrade always out there? Is there a cure for this sickness?
