hey guys, i have a quick question. i went to LFS today and got "tank raised percula" clownfish. Is that same as tank raised oscillaris. all the colors and every thing look the same. Only difference i see is between them and TRUE percula . I am so confused. pls help. Can i keep tank raised percula and tank raised oscillaris together?
Also : i hear that oscillaris are called false percula.. is that right? then isnt tank raised percula is a false percula too as its color is dfferent than true percula?? someone please clear my confusion. thanks a million

Amphiprion ocellaris = false perc

Amphiprion percula = true perc

So, to answer you question. No, a "tank raised percula" is not the same as a "tank raised ocellaris", they are a different species.

All that tank raised means is that they weren't collection from the ocean, but raised from fry from a captive breading pair. It can apply to any fish that is raised by breading, and has nothing to do with a species.

It is possible to keep a percula and an ocellaris together, but personally I like keeping just the same species together. Should only have 2 clowns (( ideally same species )) in the same tank.

but does this mean that tank raised percula has diff color than true percula? mine doesnt have the big black strip (right near the neck)
also i can ONLY have 1 pair in 39 gallon tank? or can i have 2 pairs?

There are some things you should consider though. First, all of the clowns mentioned have been readily bred in captivity. Tank-bred clowns help prevent depletion from the ocean. Also tank bred clowns are generally considered hardier. Wild-caught clowns are notorious for carrying brooklnella, aka Clownfish Disease.

Behaviorly, some people have noted differences, although it is certainly arguable. Some feel wild clowns are more apt to host in something. Others report that tank bred clowns act a little more "unnatural". Frankly I think that's hooey, but I do wonder if wild clowns are genetically more diverse than the tank bred ones, and if so that might explain those reports.

They seem to be swimming fine. And yes, you can only have one pair in a 39g tank. I wouldn't even consider putting 2 pairs of clowns together unless my tank were at least 150g, and even then it can be risky.

Yeah, fine, it's night time, kicking it in host.
OP, tank or wild does not define true or false perc, both are percs.
I'm all for tank bred for reasons tufacody mentioned.
Colors will change some w/ maturity.
Occs seem much slower to take to host than percs IMO, but yes, you could have one of each, but definitely no more than one pair.
