tank semi crash

Well crud. My Sea Hare died and I think he released enough toxins to kill all my corals. It happened within a 24 hour period. I couldnt find him for few days, then all of a suddon all of my corals were lifeless and then last night i found the sea hare and he was gone.

All of my fish are fine and i've done a 15g water change since. Acctually my xenias are starting to stand back up, but they havent "puffed" back up nor gotten thier color back. Im going to do another 15g change this weekend. Everything is testing fine except the nitrates are around 10ppm.

I guess at this point when I get the 120 I got from alafish up, it may be a FOWLR for awhile.

Sounds like ammonia from the dead sea hare was a part of the cause.

Well i know they are supposed to release some toxin or something when they die. I never saw or noticed any cloudy ness, it was just a sudden change in the corals and this is the only thing I can associate with it.

Water changes will help. If it is toxins from the hare, carbon might work wonders.

I hope I can as well. Im almost sure the xenia will make a come back, but I was really hoping the candycane frags I had gotten from philip will make it through. They had great color, bright red outsides with a super bright neon green center. The zoas i hope will make it, but I dont know if the frogspawn will, all i see of it is the skeleton

I don't think they have toxins in them.. I had huge one that sucked up into my intake of my closed loop.. 4200Gph pump lol.. He pretty much got multched to the point there wasn't much to pull out. I never had any negitive effects from it though.. But then again maybe I just had enough water volume to dilute it. I'm like Tomoko it was probaby a ammonia spike.

Actually they do have toxins (diterpene, etc.) that come from the algae they eat, but their toxins are in their digestive glands and not in their skin tissues. The toxins seems to be relatively weak since there is only two known cases of people getting sick (not dead) after eating them - yes, Pacific Islanders do eat sea hares, but the sea hares have to be cleaned properly.

When my huge dolabella sea hare starved to death, it did not foul up my tank or release any ink to get my tank cloudy (it releases purple ink if you step on it), either. The tank inhabitants were not affected, either.

Btw, my xenia's are making a good come back. Perking up and already getting thier bright pink color back.
