Tank Set-up Questions

Are these durso overflows really that noisy?

Im looking at getting a RR Marineland 65gallon with a corner overflow. Im really not looking to drill my tank (cant afford a $250 mistake cracking the tanks / void warranty) or buy an expensive custom tank. Can you just run a Herbie in a 2 drain corner overflow? Does it really cut down on the noise level? Is it easy to set-up a herbie? Does anyone have any luck running a quiet durso?

**Side info, my sump tank will be in the basement. Im not worried about noise in the sump just the draining out of the main tank / return to the main tank**

I always say check craigslist first......great deals for complete setups. You can find the info on youtube and yes its simple......good luck!

Use the 1" line as the emergency drain and the 3/4" line as the full Siphon. Run the return over the back. Dead silent.

I have a 60 cube with a factory corner-flo... I used the factory durso for a while, but the noise, while really not that loud, was more than I wanted to listen to. I converted to a herbie style drain a couple of months ago.

Easy, cheap, and effective. Put an inline gate valve on the existing drain to the sump inlet, and shortened the standpipe a few inches. Popped the elbow off of the top of the return line, and plumbed it direct to the sump. Ran an external 1" tube up the back, used a couple of 90's to go over the edge of the tank, and threaded in the loc-line that came with the tank.

Silence. Now I'm thinking about replacing my return pump with something quieter, since the hum it makes is now the loudest component of the system.

How noisey are we talking here. Ive got a 2 year old and a tv in the same room as this tank. Am i going to hear the durso over those two?

Also do you have some pics of the system now that its a plumbed herbie?

I am so paranoid about Craigslist. I have problems trusting other peoples tanks, every cheap tank ive gotten off craiglist has needed some serious silicone work or it would leave like a sive. 65 gallons on the floor with no warranty worries the crap out of me.

So true...
Or sometimes the fan lights.
You will never hear either over the TV or a 2 year old.
You will definitely hear a Durso though.

I had that same 65 gallon tank with a factory durso and if you set the drain pipe towards the top so only the vent is above the water line it's not bad. I could hear a little water trickling but that's it. You have to make sure your return pump is matched to the flow... If you under power that drain you will get gurgling from it. A DC pump with a controller would be best so you can tune the pump to match the flow of the drain. Set it up with freshwater from the hose to do a test run so you can play with the flow.

you WILL hear it and after a month of it you WILL be tired of it ;)

Do it right the first time and avoid all doubt! Herbie (or my preference) Beananimal.

Thanks for the info! Good to hear from someone with the tank.

Ill be doing the Herbie since Im not going to drill the tank for a Bean.

In regards to matching the flow of the tank. LFS said the durso drains at like 740gph. I have 10 foot head pressure so i have to get a sizable pump (no problem) but if I get one that is over that 740gph how do i control that without buying a DC controllable motor? Would it be a matter of adjusting with ball valves on the sump return? Can you ever get it perfect? Is it easier to correct a higher GPH with ball valves on a herbie? The LFS seems very confident that they are going to be able to get the durso dialed in and running silent. Im skeptical but am adventurous and would have no problem running a durso for a week, draining the tank and making it a herbie with some pvc if needed. Ive got no rush when the tank gets ordered. They are all happy in my 20 gallon right now.

My tank is in my living room, having to blast TV volume to overpower the durso noise is one of the reasons I switched to a herbie. As for your 2 year old... my 2 year old grandson stays with us... there's no way plumbing noise is going to overpower a 2yo :)

A pic of the successfully modified corner-flo. There's a screen on the full flow pipe, not on the trickle pipe. Eventually, I'm going to paint the outside return line black.

Just the plumbing part under the stand... gate valve came from Amazon, like $12, if I remember right. The straight down pipe is the trickle pipe, drops into my regugeum. Return line is plumbed through a bulkhead just because of the rather odd stand I have.

Hope this helps!

To tune an AC pump all you have to do is put a T on the out side of the pump with a gate valve and have the un used water dump back into the sump. That way your not restricting the pump at all. Close the valve and you will get full pressure from the pump

Thats a great idea. I would have never thought of that. Clearly Im going to try and match it as best I can so im not gonna have a ton pumping out the side too.
