Tank Settling back to drab...AGAIN

So after my switch into my 100 gallon upgrade, everything seemed to get SO much brighter. Growth took off, color burst everywhere. Since most people on here know of my issue with SPS color lately, this is kind of a continuum of that topic once again.

Im trying to list some things that either did or did NOT happen during the move that might have affected things.

1. 30-40 gallons new water
2. relatively higher DKH for a time being around 11
3. skimmer was not working for about 2-3 weeks
4. tank was stirred up possibly releasing nitrates and po4

So since the move as i said things have gone back to drab in my tank. I can tackle the first one the list stating that most likely WAS NOT the factor that positively changed my tank. Since the move ive done 2x 32gallon changes and no change was notice. i have done other more regular smaller changes too since

The dkh has relatively been good too since the move. The lowest i saw it dip to was 8dkh but i got it back up to 9dkh after that.

This brings me to the most interesting issue on the list. i MAY be going nuts, but it seems that my skimmer being non-functioning for a few weeks might have done it? ib know the possibility of my tank being too nutrient poor has been mulled over before, but i really think that this is a valid idea now. im thinking i might make my skimmer purposely NOT skim for a few weeks and just rely on water changes. i will still run the skimmer, just not to produce, though because keeping oxygen exchange is an important issue in maintaining tank PH.

I also in my "excited" new tank mode was doing nightly feeding of prawn roe also.

idk but what do you all think about me doing that skimmer test? think i could be adversely affected? i wanna figure this out ! lol let me know if anyone has anything to add!!

I'm not one to talk right now as I'm having issues also. How is the polyp extension a couple hours after the lights go out? Have you tested nitrates? calibrated your refractometer recently? Phosphate test? (I have a calibration and a phosphate tester if you would like. I take beer in exchange!)

I have noticed that

(1) redbugs do a number on SPS (take a macro shot and zoom in on the computer, they sem to like your tri-color!) treatment with interceptor was a success.

(2) I have increased feeding and the response has been fantastic. still working on a blend, currently mix a shot glass worth of oyster eggs, coral frenzy, rotifers, and cyclopeze - 50% into display and 50% to sump. do this every other day.

TMZ believes the fish should produce enough waste (food). curious as to why they respond so well to increased feeding.

(3) boosting my PH to 8.3/8.4 seemed to increase PE

(4) dosing via pumps throughout the day was notable in the sps.

yea PE on my sps after lights out seems to be good. some nights more than others. like tonight, i fed a bunch of prawn roe, and wow the polyps are out in force tonight!

ill shoot some macros tomorrow, been hung up with this cancer BS lately with surgery and such. but i have a few weeks off now so its a nice time to experiment!

hang in there, we're rooting for you! Let me know if you have a few and I'll stop ver with the hanna and the calibration fluid.

if youre off this week, which it looks like you are, swing over tomorrow if you want. I have a hannah(just not your ultra low res one) and calibration for refractometer.

give me a call tomorrow

we wish you well Brandon :)
btw, where did you get "pawn roe", how small are they? would like to give that a try.

I cant help think this is nutritional<----note not the same as nutrient.(i.e- inorganic forms nitrogen ,phosphate ect...Protien skimmers are excellent for what they do but with little food input and quickly removing nutrition I think "might" be why you seen the results you did when it wasn't working.

FWIW-From a discussion with Ken Feldman that Im remembering at the moment he was maintaining NO3 in the parts per billion, yet had "fat fish" and a colorfull SPS dominant reef.-(nope I dont remember how long term)My memorys shot.

Sorry man.

Refering to nutrient as inorganic forms i.e.- nitrate, phophate.CO2 ect.. are considered nutrients.

Nutritional -,organic form,"food" sources, protiens ,organic carbon sources.

This post is great.. I too have been battling low nutrient issues... Cleaner is not always better... My acro coloration has been bleek at best.. They have some PE but the they will look somewhat bleached.. So minus a light issue if they look whitish and not brown they if all the other factors are in order then you know you have low nutrients. A good test, if you have any brains they look shrivled or candys that have small fleshy bodies and not swollen and full then nutrients are low... I hope that makes sense I will post a pic of a low nutrient acro situation.

If you could, start a thread on your issues, that way everyone can learn something from your experience.

The SPS sound like they could have Red Bugs (don't be ashamed, they seem to be getting around). These little suckers can be so small you can't see them. You might want to take a really good picture and zoom in, if you don't have the camera bribe someone with beer

not sure on your LPS - have you tested phosphate with a digital meter?
