tank temp

Hi,

I have been noticing that my tank has been hitting 83/84 degrees during the daytime hours. I have central air on, but should this be a concern, or that is not to bad. At night it is around 79/80 which is were I normally keep it

do you have a chiller on yoru tank? 84 is a little on teh high side

no I don't This is the 2nd summer I have had the tank and I don't recall it getting this high.

you might want to put a fan on the sump set to come on when yoru temp get to about 81.

I don't want to hijack your thread, but i have 29 gallon and this will be my first summer with it. As of now I have no AC but that might change in a few weeks. I haven't seen the temp over 82 yet. Is it going to be a problem, and if so what are my options? As far as i know chillers are a little pricey. You're all gonna laugh at me.... but is it rediculous to make ice cubes with RO water and put some in the sump on hot days?????

it depends on what your keeping? softies should be okay but if its sps 84-79 is way too large of a swing. the most important thing here is to keep it stable

I used to have my temp at 82 and all my rics bleached and withered away so you may need to worry about softies. Or perhaps I had an isolated incident not related to water temp (I am not the most responsible person when it comes to water testing and whatnot)

For my 29g, I kept a few 1L soda bottles filled 3/4 with RO/DI and put them in the sump on the bad days. If you keep enough of them you always have at least one frozen and ready, and you don't have to worry about changing your water composition. Evaporative cooling is a huge help though--get those fans blowing and keep up with your topoff water.

I don't have a sump. I was thinking about timing my lights to come on later in the day and maybe turn off 9:30 10:00. I have to monitor it.

If you don't have a sump you are definitely gonna have heat problems when the summer really hits. If i were you i would consider getting one if you are not gonna get a chiller.

If you can spring for the cash the chiller is the way to go. Ive had one for 2 years and simply i just dont have to worry about temp problems. I sleep good at night knowing that.

those small fans are not gonna do anything for a 55 gallon.

Get a pillar fan from your local Walmart. They can really put out the air. Someone else suggested a shop fan, which is compact, noisy as all getout, but if you're at work during the heat of the day, no sweat.

Personally, I'm paranoid. If the lethal temperature is 85, and my thermometer, which cost less than 10.00, says 84---what if it's wrong by one degree? Give yourself as much room as you can.

At worst, you can reverse your day night cycle to put the lights on during the cool of the night. The fish don't care.
