Tank temperature

Ok guys, so I have a 75 gallon FOWLR tank with a 4" Panther grouper and a 8-10" snowflake eel, the problem I'm having is that my tanks temperature ranges from 80-82 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the day, it's usually 81 during the day and for some reason, during the night, it rises to 82. The question I have is, is that temperature ok for my fish and if not, how can I lower it down to an acceptable temperature. Also my house is at 78 and the tank does not have a heater. My lighting is two t5 bulbs that run from 8-4 and a single t8 bulb that runs from 4-8. Thanks in advance

The temp should be fine. If you want to bring the temp down you can have a small fan blow across the water on top of the tank or if you want to spend the money, buy a chiller. I would say you'll be fine where you are though.

Ok, I think I might buy a fan to cool the temp a bit so they will be thriving instead of just surviving and so I can have a bit of peace of mind

82 is fine, I start to get nervous when my tank gets to 84. I have my fans kick in at 80 degrees to keep it below 82.

Agree, temp is fine and 84 is about where i start to worry as well.
What pumps are you running?
That can make a difference.
Closed or open top?

Good lord turn the room temp down. I would die of heat stroke sitting in 78 degrees all day. What are you running a nursing home over there?

Put the room temp at 68 or 70. Problem solved.

How do u sleep in that!?

To me 78 degrees is cool. 70 degrees is getting cold. Depends what your use to. I guess the "anals" are frozen most of the time.

Lol it I just could be heat intolerant dude that freezes everyone out.

Seriously. 72 degrees I start to sweat sitting around in my underwear.

Hey guys, so I am running an eheim return pump 400 GPH as well as a protein skimmer with a maxi jet hooked up to it, I also have a uv sterilizer as well running on the tank and a small powerhead and it's half open for right now, one side has a glass hood on it and the other side has an acrylic good with hundreds of holes in it which is what I'm about to replace the glass side with acrylic and do the same. My house stays at 78 because I have my grandma living with me, if I didn't, trust me my house would be right around 70-72 lol. Also I've left the lights off for the day and my temp has been around 80.9 degrees Fahrenheit but the highest I've ever seen my tanks temp is around 83.1. When I replace the glass side, I'm going to put a hole in the acrylic for a fan to sit on top but be able to draw the hot air out and have the fan facing outward and I may add a fan on the opposite side facing inward as well. So let me know what you guys think, thank you for your help

Well, the uv is not needed for one, two you could replace those tops w/ a mesh top that would breathe much better, BRS makes screen kits, it's what many of us use in providing gas exchange from the open top while keeping jumpers in.
The top alone would probably drop you a degree or two.
Pay attention to watts when buying gear, watts equal heat.
As mentioned, you are not bad, but it would be nice to keep tank close to that ambient temp if keeping that at 78

Natural reefs in Australia range anywhere between 75F and 95F (roughly converted from Celsius as I don’t really use Fahrenheit). Sometimes they can even go through almost that whole temp range in a single day.

I'm still new to this hobby so I try not to recommend that anyone else to do the same as I do however I run my tank at 83-84. To save on power my chiller turns on at 85 and will usually be on all day if I'm not home with the air-conditioning going. When I first started the hobby I did weeks of research into just temperature alone to make sure I wasn’t putting my fish and coral at risk. I found that in our hobby it seems anything up to 85F is fine as long as there isn’t a sudden change. There was even one reefer I found who had a successful tank which had been running for a couple of years at 87.5F!!

So you will be fine at 80-82. If you really want to lower it as said running the tank with a screen top and some fans blowing over the surface will increase evap but will lower your temp a few degrees.

The main risk I could find with hotter water is that in the event of a power outage your water will lose oxygen faster than colder water would so a battery backup or emergency air stones are recommended.

Cheers,

Macca

Sounds like you will get a big jump (probably bring you close to ambient) by replacing those tops with 1/4" mesh screen. As davocean said, BRS makes a nice kit to do it yourself. Took me 30 min to make mine for my 258g. You may still want to add a fan, but the mesh top may be enough.

In either/both cases, you'll see more evaporation so if you do not have an ATO, be mindful that you'll need to top off more frequently.

FWIW, I use imgur to post pics.

Haha Bent, when I have the air-conditioning on my house gets down to 26 (79F) and any lower than that and i get cold :spin1:

ill definitely look into those screen tops, that would be awesome if i didnt have to use acrylic or glass

I get heat flashes above 70...i keep the house at 70. The tank is i. A sun room that in the winter does get cold.. right now i walked into the tabk at 76.2 degrees and at high sun hrs gets to about 79.9. Im trying to avoid fluctuations and maintain at 77, above 78 and the fish get agressive start raising fins and testing each other as they swim by.

Its getting annoying.

1st year for the tank in windy city winters for that room...will need to insulate the widows it will get cold
