tank tragedy

i'm hijacking my husbands account right now, but i wanted to see what i could do to make him feel better... we got back from vacation last night {on his birthday} to discover brown algae covering the side of his tank and when we got a look into it, all the corals were completely annihilated!!! .. then we saw an empty cup sitting on top of the tank, so we can only assume the person checking our home put tap water in it! i didn't know that would cause SO much damage in just a few days though! anyways, he is devastated. his tank basically consisted of frags that he had grown out himself, mainly frogspawn, torch, hammers, and monticap {?}/elkhorn hard coral. we can't afford to invest into corals right now and i feel uncomfortable asking! but to make him feel better i just thought i would see if anyone has any frags they are willing to give us to get things going again {once he gets his water quality better again!}. even small pieces, we don't mind growing them out. its just so devastating to have nothing left to work with! also, if you have any advice to get water quality back again. we're assuming complete water change but if you have any more tips, it would be very much appreciated! thank you so much!!

Have you asked the person who was watching the tank what they did. Did they have clear instructions? We're lights on/off on timer? Power outage? How are the fish/cleanup crew. I am guessing water parameters have been checked... but ya. Pull dead. Clean brown off glass. Run filter with floss/carbon. Run skimmer wet. Scrub rocks if needed. And lots of water changes. Good luck.

You may want to ask in the general forum areas..may get more views on info for restarting/cause pondering.

Honestly... Without knowing exactly what happened, it's too early to be adding any new frags. Identify the problem, implement corrections, stabilize, and then rebuild.

Good luck!

I'm willing to donate some stuff but I'm not going anywhere near Chandler anytime soon. Are you sure the corals are dead or are they just unhappy?

I have frogspawn I can give a head or 2 once you are sure your issue is corrected. PM me when you are ready

I have a couple blasto merletti frags I could donate. They're little, but got about 5-8 heads each. Just sitting on my sand bed after they fragged themselves off the main colony.

But Doug is definitely right, the tank should be stabilized first or you'll just lose more livestock and probably make the situation worse.

tap water isn't going to kill anything if used for top off. It's only fair to ask what have you investigated as a root cause prior to putting in anything living into the tank.
