Hi I have a aquapod thats been up and running for awhile now and its started leaking have patched it best I can but it has started again and I cant stop it this time My question is if I pull rock, sand, fish, snails, hermits and what few zoas are in the tank out and put them into a new tank temp untill I can finish up working on my 125 will everything be ok? any certian way I should do it? I am up for a water change tomorrow anyway so I was going to use the old tank water and just add the new water too it instead of all new water

Personally, I would probably not do the sand, depending on how old and/or clean it is. Reason being that sand usually is a crap trap, unless its shallow and often stirred by critters.

I would grab everything but (including the old water) and put it in whatever you have.

In short, I wouldn't do the sand and I wouldn't do all new water. :)

I really would like to keep the sand as its got alot of life and also would like to in the end finally transfer it into the 125 as well

I have moved tanks three times and always keep the sand. I would think it would be okay. But everyones feeding pattern and fish stock varies. I only had two small fish all the times I have moved.

I rinsed my 5yr old sand (reef special grade) and reused it from when the office tank overheated and it worked fine. I was going to reuse some other sand. but it was way to fine to rinse well. so i guess my experience has been it depends on the coarseness of the sand. i would expect very coarse sand like crushed coral might even have big enough pours to hold macro sized junk that would not ne washable.

just my thoughts,

Moving to my new tank a few weeks ago, I learned to DOUBLE CHECK SALINITY. I payed big for that mistake.

Well the only fish I have are 2 clowns and like I said a few zoas I didnt wanna end up adding more to the tank once I started to noticed it leaking and end up with a bigger problem on my hands down the road now I am glad I waited

What can I use for a good filter while they are in the new tank? The only thing I was using on the aquapod was filterfloss but ofcourse I had te false backwall to work with

How much live rock do you have? From what I've heard, if you have 1.5 to 2lbs of live rock/live sand per gallon of water, all you need is pumps to keep water flowing through the rocks and keep waste and uneaten food from settling on the sand. I found with my biocube 14 that it was pretty stable running without any filter media (although I did leave the sponge in place to keep my pump from getting clogged).

I've got from what I remember about 40lbs give or take Im running without filter media just sand and rock so we shall see :)

Reef special grade sand? Bart, please explain....what makes this sand so special compared to many sands that we get from the ocean?
