tap water in ro/di container

how much tap water will it take to "ruin" a 30 gallon container of near zero TDS RO/DI water?

just wondering because i mix new satly water outside the house in the yard but before i do, i wash the container "trashcan" with my garden hose. i do let it dry out but let say i dont, i leave the can wet and start to add ro/di water of near zero tds.

will a little bit of tap water with a TDS of 250 ruin 30 gallons of of fresh ro/di near zero tds?

I rinse out my container, dump it upside down and give it a good shake. Then fill it with RO water for a change.

I think it will be fine if the inside is wet.

Did you test the water with a TDS meter?try taking a little of each in a glass, and try testing it with even amounts of each and then again with a 4:1 ratio.
Unless you don't have a TDS meter then I would'nt risk it,you stand to loose a lot more in corals.Good luck.
So long,Pete

thanks. i been doing it for a couple of years too but just start wondering about this stuff all of a sudden

pete, i do have a tds meter and i have check my ro/di water but never once have i pulled it out of storage when mixing up some new salty water. just never got to it but im going to see what tds number i get this weekend

because it stays outside. i have it upside down. i rinse it before a pwc and after. somedays it rains and it blows it down and rolls around the yard so some grass and dirt will get in it.

sometimes i dont rinse the trash can after the pwc so the next pwc i find so dried up salt on the bottom and insects all over it.

i got tired of hauling the can inside the house from the garage. got tired of water drops and spills on the floor. now pwc is done through a window near the tank, no mess, and no worries. im kinda lucky i did this because one day, a full 30 gallons spilled over when the trashcan suddenly bent over. glad it did it outside.

Why do you wash the container?

I use two "Aqua-tainer" blue jugs from Wal-Mart.

I use one to mix new water and the other to put the old water in so I'm sure I take out the same amout I have new.

I risne the container out that I make new water in because I can never remember which one had just new water or old water.

Also I want to rinse out any residue even if it was the one with new water.

If anyone is really paranoid they can just add about a gallon of RO/DI and swish it around, then dump it...
