Tats 240

Time to start my painfully slow 240 build.

Its a Glasscages 240 long (8x2x2) bought from Craigslist.

Its going to be a mixed reef but focusing mainly on SPS.

Many of my plans are still up in the air and the build will go as fast as my money will allow which could be quite a while.

My previous tank was a 75 ( build thread here ) that I recently tore down. I ended up with something nasty that wiped out all but two of my fish and I had been battling red turf algae for quite a while. I decided it was time to start over.

I removed what little I have for corals and my inverts. Theyre currently living in a 22g tub and will stay there for the next 8-12 weeks to kill off whatever wiped out my fish.

I bleached all my rock, sand and ran bleach through my 75 system for two days. The system is now being used to cycle my rock and some Pukani that was given to me by a friend.

My first plan was to set up a 125 that I bought from a friend. After drilling the back for a Beananimal overflow and painting it, I took it outside to pain the trim. After sitting in the sun for 20 minutes the black back got so hot it cracked. A couple days later another friend found this 240 on craigslist.

Lights

In the beginning I will be using a pair of 48" Coralife Aqualight Pro 2x250w fixtures with Phoenix 14ks. I currently have one on my 75 and a spare that needs a new ballast.

I want to upgrade to either 3 or 4 Lumenarcs in the future when all of the other major parts are out of the way.

Flow

I'm still trying to decide between a closed loop or Powerheads. I don't want to see PHs or cords but I don't want the noise of a CL pump.

If I go PHs it will be Koralias. There's no way I can bring myself to spending the money on Vortechs.

If I go the CL route I want to go with either an OM 4 or 8 way with the returns either over the top through Seaswirls or a mix of SSs and bulkheads in the back. I have no idea what I would need for a CL pump on a tank this size to avoiding needing PHs.

Any thoughts on which way I should go?

Misc.

Reefkeeper Elite
75 gallon sump/fuge with a Beananimal overflow.

Chiller, Ca Reactor - No thoughts on this yet.

Skimmer - Leaning towards an SRO 5000. Open to suggestions.

Rock is a mix of Marco Key Largo and BRS Pukani. I plan on picking up 50-100 more lbs of Pukani.

My first step will be to build a new stand. After advice given here and additional research it seems the stand that came with the tank is an engineering disaster waiting to happen. Ill be doing this in the about 3 weeks hopefully. I need to rearrange the bedroom before build the stand so it only needs to be moved once.

Ill also be building a false canopy to hide the lights. It will be open on the top and easily removable.

I love the size of your new tank 240 long, always been big fan of long aquariums. Ii respect to the power heads I know vortech care expensive why dont you try tunze wave box they are a little bit cheaper and they help the sps to growm even and nicely.
Ill be checking this build..

Wow Ive never actually seen one of those until now. Anyone know if that will work with a Beananimal overflow?

I decided to go 40 inches on it so I dont need to stoop over much anymore. With the 3/4 ply top and foam under the tank it will be about 41.5.

I forgot to take pics before we loaded it in the truck. Im going to paint it tomorrow so will take some of the completed frame then.

Ill be skinning it sometime later. For now I just needed to get the frame built so I can get the tank moved out of the living room.

The area on the right side of the base is framed to hold my 75g for the sump.

My corals that were in the tub all died. I moved it all to a 40b and last week forgot to turn off my topoff water before I fell asleep. Woke up to a flooded floor and a dead holding tank.

Some friends came over today and we finally got the tank moved on to the new stand.

So now its finally time for some pics. The stand was made for full access so the front is easily removable.

Ill build a matching canopy for it sometime during the winter and will add panels between the stand and canopy to fill in the gap to the wall.

Ill be getting the bulkheads in a couple weeks. I wont have the return pump or OceanMotion for quite a while so once I get the bulkheads in Im going to valve and cap them so I can at least get it filled and start cycling it.

The entire thing is 66" tall. Finally a tank I dont need to stoop over to look at! :)

i think my next tank will be this size, how do you like the dimensions so far? if you could what would be different about it?

I love the dimensions. Its always been my dream tank. Long enough for most of the "larger" tangs and deep enough to do some cool rock work without being too big.

I wouldn't change anything about the size but I would have preferred to go with a higher quality brand but I really couldn't pass up the price.

The biggest downside is I live in a two bedroom apartment. Not much room for a tank this size. :lmao:

Picked up most of my fittings today. Forgot the 2" stuff but I cant start that until BRS gets the bulkheads in.

Ok the back is painted, all the plumbing is done and the leak test is finished. Its time for the final RO fill. :)

Pallan is letting me borrow his old pump for a little bit until I get my own in the very near future. Ill be using a pair of Reeflo Snapper/Dart hybrids. The Snapper version for the return and Dart version along with an Oceans Motions 4 way for the closed loop. The CL will be valved off until I can buy my own pumps.

I'm hoping BRS will have a good sale on either the pump or Pukani rock on Black Friday. I'm going to pick up another 80lbs or so.

Its officially running!

Nothing much to look at but tonight I got it filled with RO, got the salt mixed in, took all the sand and rock from my 40 and put it in the sump and put the bit of Pukani I have in the DT. I also dropped in my only two remaining fish. A yellowtail damsel and a flame hawkfish.

Over the next couple days Ill get my gfo/carbon reactors hooked up. RKE and power bar put in, and skimmer dropped in the sump.

Just a couple quick crappy cell phone pics.
