Tbe worst feeling, rtn from kent carbon

Well instead of buying the usual Cheapo carbon from the lfs i thought what the heck and picked up some Kent marine carbon.added the one pound the my media bad at night.woke up in the morning to a bunch of dead sps and those that aren't are almost.didn't know what happened so I got on Google and to my surprise it was the recalled Kent carbon that caused it. I removed the carbon asap, had only been on for 12 hours . And did a 5in gal water change on my 220g tank, then ran out of salt, this was yesterday. Tonight I picked up more salt and am doing about a 30gin change .


Here's the worst part,my basketball size Leng Sy cap doesn't look like it is gonna pull through.the tank is 100% sps most all, tank is nearly full, are ora and the rest is other LE pieces that I have found.


Really bummed and will be contacting Kent tomorrow with an invoice from my lfs on replacement cost. What do you all figure that Leng Sy cap is worth. Probably won't get anything from them but I have many thousands in rare sps that don't look too good right now, algae is already starting to form on the skeletons.

Really a bad deal and almost makes me want to quit but I enjoy the hobby too much.

Ya, that sucks. Sorry for your loss.

Here is a little more info on the Kent recall. If you look at post #16 it has the companies response. I hate to break it to you, but I don't think they are paying for tank losses.

Man that is heart breaking. Can't imagine how angry I would be. Why wouldn't that product get removed from the shelf? I'll have to read about it on google. I hope some of your stuff pulls through.

I would be mad at your LFS. They should have been contact as a distributor. At the least they should have known and checked their supply. It's been an issue a while now.

Where you located? I'm sure some local reefers will want to help you when your ready to stock back up.

I talked to my lfs today and they had no clue, the onset was calling the distributor while I was leaving to give him an ear full.

I am located in Humboldt county, northern California.

I am not expecting a payout but I have read that a few people have gotten one so who knows.

Thia just confirms that I will never use a Kent product ever again.

The bummer is I never use carbon and them decided to try some Kent carbon instead of the cheap stuff.

Corals are looking better after my 30g water change 5g at a time while system was running.

Hopefully stuff will pull through.

I feel for you. I lost my SPS collection twice before, once to AEFW's and then to another issue. Hopefully your remaining stock pulls through.It sucks big time. When a product is recalled, those in the whole chain should ensure that the defective product is pulled from the shelves.Make a claim with Kent. Good luck.

Id be mad at my LFS. Many of us have known for a month or so...if it was my business and customers i would be interested in the potential problems that selling bad product would create for my business. I walked into my LFS 2 weeks ago to buy carbon (ESV) and the owner was sure to tell me that Kent had recalled the proper batches and sent him new product for his shelves. Your LFS should have known...at the very least his distributor should have informed him via a phone call. If it were me Id swear off KENT and that LFS.

but I wouldnt give up, invoice them for the problems they have caused.

I would even hold the LFS who sold it to you responsible ! WHY not remove it from the shelves if its no good ?

I told the LFS around my area, they pulled it down right then, they simply didnt know, and I told them how it would be their fault, as they need to stay on top of their game.

I know it will not replace ure loss, most cases, money never replaces it, but I would wanna see some paying you, since they clearly are still selling these, tryint to "crash" ppl tanks !

I think people need to understand that Kent has acknowledge the error in their product and are trying there best to fix it. It will take time. All LFS's need to keep.them selfs up to date. Remember a lot of places only order thru a 3rd party vendor and never from Kent directly. Their other products are amazing.

I hear u, but imagine if this was something humans consumed and the bad batch would have killed humans, do you think stores would continue selling them ? or would the company send a msg so loud that all bad batches are removed world wide ?

Tasimo coffe makers in north america, were ALL recalled, they day that the little girl burned her face, u could not find another one in walmart or anythwere else ! it was removed within minutes !

why ? is life of a dog worth more than life of a fish or corals ? or is it that no court would take up "coral death" while every court would love a dog killer case ?

I think they are trying to squeeze every last penny out of this ... in return for their rep.

I feel the same way as our corals are our animals they in some instances are the dog or cat to us and the LFS should also help replace your corals..

The Biggest reason and I can't believe I am typing it...

Most of the world does not think that our tanks are like pets. They put them on the level of "Their just fish and rocks" . Not what we think they are. PETS and living art and something that we spend hundred of hours on and thousands of dollars to build and maintain.

Sorry to hear of your loss...Local guy in our club suffered the same fate...one of most talked about tanks in our club. It's heartbreaking, but hopefully your club is like ours, lots of people are giving up frags to help him rebuild.
