TDS of 5 PPM safe?

Just got off the phone with BRS. They will send me a replacement for the DI resin because they screwed up the assembling of the RO unit and I ended up taking the waste water through the DI, depleting the resin on only 35G of water produced.

After reconnecting things my water is coming out with a 5ppm TDS off the DI unit(because of the damaged resin). Until I receive the replacement in a few days, that's all I have.

Is it 5 ppm too much? I wanted to do one more water change to my DT and start some fish in TTM and I need water. Should I wait?

As soon as you tell us exactly what the 5 TDS is composed of we can answer that for you..
Could be totally fine.. could be toxic.. Without testing you (and we) just know that you have some dissolved solid..

As to Sk8r point, no special rush here, just wanted to start things faster, so it seems that waiting is less complicated and safer.

Now and for my intellectual growth, what should I test for if I really needed to know what that 5ppm is about?

The only answer to the question is, maybe. Could be copper - not good. Could be magnesium - no problem. That's why we demand zero. I get 0 zero but after being in the Brute container is go to 5 or more, but I know what it is.

TDS of 5 PPM safe?

No, unless you are able to know what exactly is in the 5ppm. 5ppm is enough to be detrimental to your system if it contains certain unwanted contaminates. Since it is very difficult to know exactly what contaminates could in the water that pass through is why a TDS of 000 is wanted. To remove as much as possible and remove doubt that water is a problem. If your water is a problem or you have a problem yet the RO is questionable then how can you ever find the cause of a problem?

You can always do what I did, have your tap water lab-tested. Mine is calcium-rich, metal-free, chloramine-free, with a mild phosphate load... In fact I intentionally use tap water from time to time to top off.

The big one is what the others said. Not knowing what the 5 TDS is. My RODI water goes in a bucket thats open to air. After sitting for a week it goes from 0 to 3-4 TDS, likely from stuff either in the bucket (residue) or airborne. I'm not too worried, cause its not copper.

I have no idea what is in my water besides chloramine, which I know for a fact that my city uses for disinfectant.

I rather wait, it sucks that as this is a replacement BRS chose the regular shipping which will take about 4- days.
