Tds question

May be a stupid question but will kalk in my ato throw off a tds meter. I ask because I have had a little gha in one of my tanks despite registering a 0 nitrate reading on salifert & .015 po4 on a ulr meter. This is pretty consistent with what I tested before the gha popped up. I have always tested 0 nitrate & used to always test 0 po4 until I quit draining the frozen food & started feeding heavier. Since I started feeding heavier the po4 is now atleast registering on a test but still 0 on nitrate. Seems like there must be some nitrate but the ha is sucking it up as soon as it can so I get a zero on the test. Although I have always got a clear reading on salifert test even before the ha.

Anyways, I have a inline tds meter on my rodi that has always read 0 after the di but I started wondering if my brute storage container & mixing container may be leaching something so I bought a handheld tds meter. It reads 0 in my storage container. I have two seperate systems & both systems have fish tanks as ato containers so I know they won't leach anything but in my ato tank that I have kalk in it reads like 300 tds. That's why I was wondering if the kalk will throw off the tds meter. In my other ato tank with no kalk it actually reads 6 tds which kinda confuses me also.

One other question, I have always thought of algea as having nutrients in the tank, but can a nitrate depleted system with a small amount of po4 actually cause a imbalance that may be causing the gha. I will post a pic of the system so u guys can see the corals & amount of gha, which really isn't much but it just won't go away. My system is a mixed reef with about 12 LPS & around 20 sps. They all seem to have ok but slow growth, ok but not great colors & all but a blue voodoo have ok but not great polyp extension.

Anything you put in your ro/di water will register on your tds meter. Your ro/di just sitting in open air to long will register on your tds meter in My experience.

Thanks Toby, that's what I thought but after a while of the gha not going away I figured I would check with u guys, y'all know alot more then me. I have been trying to narrow it down what it could be so I was second guessing myself

Kalk will increase the TDS quite a bit if much is added, up to about 11,000 ppm, if my memory is correct. Carbon dioxide will enter RO/DI after some period of time, and some dust or leaching from the container might be an issue, too. I wouldn't worry about 6 ppm for stored RO/DI, personally.
