Teardrop Maxima with Nip in Mantle

I just received a 6" Teardrop Maxima - a beautiful clam and my first - with a small nip in the mantle. It looks like it was damaged in shipping.

It is acclimated and in my tank now - is opening up. The relexes are not very sensitive (I can wave my hond over it and it doesn't instantly shut). It is not gaping and otherwise looks very nice.

I will try to post a picture when I get home.

Is this something to really worry about?

I want to do all I can to make sure it remains healthy.

Thanks,

Jason

The nip can heal, but what it's from is really what the issue is..

I don't see how it could have gotten a nip through shipping... really... It may have parasitic snails, a "nip" is one characteristic of the effects, but there would be several, unless it just aquired them..

Also, the reaction of your clam isn't too good of a sign either.. When I got my teardrop however, it at first didn't respond very well, but after a couple of days, it got back to normal...

A picture would be helpful, also if it's possible, where did you aquire this clam from, in the sense of what part of the world? Solomon, Vietnam?

A picture would be great! Take a look under the mantle to distunguish whether it has any white cone snails... ( that's the descriptions of the parasite )...

Good Luck!

I purchased it from PhishyBusiness and it just arrived this morning. Too bad I am stuck in the office for a little while longer.

I talked to Serdar (at PhishyBusiness) and he said the clam looked great when he personally packed it last night. I gave it a quick once over this AM when I acclimated, but was not extremely thorough since I needed to get into the office.

I did not specify what region it came from ( i guess i should have), but since I have heard very good things about PhishyBusiness I did not ask as many questions as I normally would have.

I did not see the nip in the photo of the clam when I purchased it.

I will post a photo tonight - I really hope it is OK.

Thanks,

Jason

Don't worry about it.. I always assume the worst..

The reflex thing, like I said, my teardrop was normal after a couple of days.. The nip can be from many things..

I'll look forward to a pic, in the meantime relax.:smokin:

Thanks - I tend to be the same way.

I have been at the office all day - way to long for a Tuesday.

I do not have time to post photos tonight, BUT:

- relexes look very good - i wave my hand over the top of the tan and the mantle retracts quickly

- The nip looks like it happened a little while ago and is healing

- without removing or touching the clam, i have been examining for any parasites and it looks good

Hopefully I can post photos tomorrow night

Thanks for the input,

Jason

Alot of times, these nips, or tears in the edge of the mantle seem to be from shipping stress. Healthy clams usually heal back up within 2 weeks.

Sometimes the stress may form a 3rd hole between the incurrent and excurrent siphons.

Best of luck, Rob

Thanks Rob - I just saw some of your new clams - beautiful!

Once I am comfortable with this new guy, I will definitely be looking for a couple more from you - I love your site and have heard very good things about your clams.

So far, this guy is looking very good - hopefully he will still look good when I get home from work!

Thanks,

Jason

Maybe this weekend i can get the pictures right.

Man, a new Sony 5.0 pixel camera and i cannot get a decent photo. I need some help :D
