Tearing down a perfect wall......450 gallon Bowfront

Thanks for the links Eric , I was thinking about the type that you designed for your tank. One question I have are they adjustable or no?

Yes, for the the flow. You slide the pipe up and down over the drilled holes to let more or less water go down the pipe. You do want to drill your holes where you want the water to be in your overflow. If it is short than you have a bigger fall into the over flow that makes a little more noise. If you goggle search them I am sure you can find step by step directions. But they are real easy to make.

A thought i had looking at the sump was that spray bar is going to give you micro bubbles and secondly i was wondering why you put the valve below the union? I would think being able to close of the pipe then being able to remove the pump for service would be better. My .02

My intension of the spray bar was to create flow over some pads on eggrate, I just haven't made the racks yet.
As for the valve right off the mag pump I had to use it as an adapter, Home depot didn't have the right adapter I needed on a sunday night.

thanks again Eric for some good ideas.

Tonight I went to Home depot for some more acrylic to make lids for the rest of the tanks below, and picked up some more 90 degree elbows and egggrate. I'm going to finish up the insulation in the attic that I forgot to do, couldn't figure out why the drywall started to sweat, well now I know and it's resolved for now.
I need to look at wades thread and see what he used for controlling the humidity above the tank.
I know it will be later untill I get some new pics up of my progress so we'll see what happens.

I have a question, does anyone climb into thier tank with a wetsuit and mask to clean thier tank?
My problem is not the front of the tank as I already purchased a HUGE mag float cleaner for that, but I can't seem to get all the areas where the external overflows are and part of the back wall.
So I'm thinking of doing some diving to accomplish this tank. Anyone else?
I could just see the wife coming home one day and I'm in there like a goof!!!

Thanks JJK-reef ,
I pretty much have the tank cycled already with about 150 lbs. of live rock in the bottom sumps below, I threw a couple damsels in there today, those suckers started to eat as soon as I threw some flake in there.
I'll wait a week or so to throw some more live stock in there, my fish in my 125 tank are really started getting to get rowdy, I think they know there about to go in the big tank.
I'm having a tough choice to go with either the
Reef Specialty Reeflo 250 or an Atb internal cone, not decided yet.
I'm picking up 2 more lumenbright reflectors and 2 ballast, I thoink these will be 250's with the coralvue ballast, instead of the icecaps.

Update:::::: To let everyone know I have been working my butt off on getting this fish room done . Well two rooms now.
After doing alot of thinking about how the sun beats down on this side of our home and I didn't want to have the temperature increasing all the time, especially the summer months, I decided I needed to gut the inside of the outter walls and replace it with new insulation and replace the old drywall with greenboard for the humidity.
I also decided to install a 36" oak panel door in the center of the wall because before when you walked into that room , you walked right into the overflow of the tank, and that was a real PITA. Plus I was thinking ahead incase I need to bring something into there that was large anyway.....kinda like a huge skimmer or something. LOL

I also decided that if I was replacing all of that drywall why not replace the rest of it on the same south end of the house in our utility room, and why not replace all the electrical wiring and outlets as well. FUN, FUN, FUN!!!

Did I mention I love working everynight untill 1 or 2 am or so and getting up the next morning at 7am for work ? A lesson I learned from was I had a small mishap last week when I thought the romex wiring I had in my hand went to the back light of the house when it was actually the wire coming form the circuit breaker, let me just say this when I cut that wire with the wire cutters, I just about crapped my shorts from the flash and pop it made basically in front of my face about 12" away!!!! Talk about a wake up call with electric!! I also couldn't hear anything for about a minute or so, but other than that I was lucky. I took a picture of the cutters that now has a hole in it from that.
I have to do a final coat of durabond and then sand away, paint both rooms and install all the new cabinets and run new lines for the sink that will go in that room as well.
I managed to loose my 10.5" Sohol tang in this process of getting in a big rush to get him into the new tank (I'm thinking it wasn't cycled enough or something). I have my 6" Hippo and a 3" yellow eyed tang and 3 clown fish in there and they have been doing great.
I'm trying to find someone local in chicago suburbs that has some clear acrylic rods 1"x 4 feet in length.
I would also like to get (3) 12" square or rectangulare sheets so I can glue them together so I can stack all my live rock on for pillars.
I'll post some pictures of my progress tomorrow, since it's that time again 1:12 am and I beat to hell.

Just ordered (2) Cat2 internal skimmers from Reef Specialty (great service). I can't wait untill they arrive here next week. These things are gonna pull some major **** out once they get broken in.
I'm thinking about how to design a charcoal cup to sit on top of the collection cup with some type of ventalation tubing and run to the outside so I won't have to smell anything.
I'll post some pictures once I get everything installed and come up with a plan.
Tonight the ceramic tile is getting installed, so that will kill any other progess for 24 hours.

Small update,
Both Hurricone Cat 2's have been pulling some major crap out, more than I could have ever imagined they would. Did I mention the stench?????
I never understood what Wade (wilamas) was talking about when he fired his Abt skimmer up and the room reaked really bad.....well now I know, so with that being said I need to act fast and install one of those fantech 190's in there not only to get rid of the smell but the humidity problem I was starting to have also.

I came up with an idea to install 4" pvc tubing under the tank that would spin on a 2x6 with a "U" shape cut to the top of the board than screw that board into one of the other existing 2x6"s just above the skimmers and run up the side to the top of the tank where the exaust fan vent is located , I still debating how I will install a 4" fan on the pvc to draw that air up easier.

I also had the aluminum light rack tig welded together.
One night I modified all the ball bearing drawer slides so they could be bolted together so the rack could raise up and down when necessary.

I also had my brother make me some 16"x 3/4" marble bases with 1" holes drilled in the centers so I could install solid acrylic rods so my liverock to be stacked on.
Two of these rods were heated up for about and hour and bent them on a slight arch to mimic a cave from one corner of the tank. They really turned out cool. Had to do alot of drilling through the rock but I planned it this way just incase I decide I want to change the aquascape in the future.

I'm saving up for a Dart hammerhead, so I can have more flow in there.
I've started to notice dead spots in the tank now that there is more rock and decorations in the tank. I really want to stay away from putting powerheads in there. But if I have to looks like a couple of Vortechs are going in somewhere they are not noticed.

I will have a bunch of pictures for everyone tomorrow.

It's almost been a month since I posted anything.
Anyway I have really busy getting everything done with what little to no time I have had this last month.
I going to change the way the drains come down into the overflows in the sumps below.

I'm thinking I want to run a "T" off the existing drain and install two 90's and run them into 8" socks and eliminate that whole spray bar idea.
I don't have any microbubbles , but I'm having issues with the pvc getting clogged so that's getting changed tomorrow.
Also I'm going to throw a couple koralia powerheads in the back of the sumps to keep the bottom clean so it won't have detrius sitting back there.

I have been working day and night for the last two days to get our laudry room done, painting, installing cabinets and installing a new door on the rear of the house. I stillhave more electrical to do this week...............yeahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

But here's some pics of what I have accomplised already.

My only question is "will this project ever be done?"

Here's one of the pillars done. turned out pretty nice.

The H.O.'s aer only temporary.
Light rack still in the works. I have a couple 2x4's in place underneath it untill I mount a linear acuator to it.
I will have another Lumenarc up there in the center when it's all said and done.
The rack is bolted to drawer slides to make it possible to go up and down smoothly. I made up some safety stops out of aluminum, because I didn't trust the small bupm stops and the bottom of the tracks.

Heres the back side of the tank, alot of people don't realize the size of this tank untill they see how deep it is from the front of the tank.

I call this guy "hotshot" always has to be the one in the picture.

Nice view of what I have to see what I have accomplished so far.

And last but not least my 3 yr old Sohol that died for no reason at all.......
DSC02477.jpg

I was pretty upset about it and thought I was going to throw in the towel. But decided to keep going and learn from my mistakes.

I hope everyone enjoys and I am always up for anyones ideas that might help me along the way to keeping a sucessful tank.

i love powder blue tangs and yours is amazing. is that all the livestock you plan on adding? (i hope not. a school of anthias' would be sweet)

thanks rastarainy, I still have my 6-7" emperoer and 4" queen angel to add in a few weeks, they are still in Qt after having an external bacterial infection.

I have friend that wants me to adopt a 12-14" Valimgi Tang in a few weeks.

1- Clarkii Clown Fish 3-4" (He has hosted alomst every anenome I had in the 125 gallon tank really cool to see him bring krill to it).
1- Kole tang 3-4"
1- Clown tang 4-4.5"
1- Diamond goby 3"
1- Red Hawk fish 2" or so
1- Eibli Dwarf angel 2" or so

1 blue damsel
1- Cleaner wrasse
1- Emperor Angel ( which is still in the 125 for Qt) around 7-8"
1- Queen Angel (also in Qt with emp and they are fine together)

Bad news today as I was feeding frozen Life line cubes to the tank I believe my Blue hippo that I have had for almost 4 yrs now, must have ate a piece that was still frozen and either choked on it or something and it started bouncing off the walls like crazy untill it died in like 15mins.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS WAS HAPPENING!! FOR NO APPEARANT REASON.
1st my large sohol now my hippo, If I didn't have so much time and money invested in this project that I'm not even done with yet , I would say It's time to call it quits.
My final complaint I have is that it's not the money that the fish cost it's the failing feeling I get when something dies. DAMIT!

Almost forgot the passer has not been mean at all in fact he really hasn't grown more than an inch since I bought him 4 yrs ago.
