Hey guys I thought I would ask here, My wife is wanting new carpet next month in our den I will have to tear down my 150g and my 50g sump for this the concern im having is it has been up for 2 years and nice and stable. I know I can put about 1/2 the water in trash cans I have and put all the rocks in one and all the fish in another but should I replace the sand ? and also am I going to lose all my stability I have a lot of nice soft corals and a lot of fish and don't want to go through a cycle. plz give any advice you have

Have them to carpet and trim around the tank. Have them leave a piece of carpet to fill in the space if you move the tank down the road. The carpet that is under the tank is so compressed it will not match the fiber height of the carpet that is not under the tank. Either way, that spot of carpet is not going to quite match in the future if the tank is moved.

I whole-heartedly agree with Tremelle.

I ran into a similar situation when I placed my current tank. Due to an unforseen change in plans I had to place the tank prior to being able to lay the tile I had planned to set the tank on.

What I did was to go ahead and place the tank, and then come back later and tile around the tank's perimeter. I ran it right up to the stand and cut the tile in such a way that it looks like there are whole tiles under the tank. I even set extra tile and grout aside in my garage so I could come back and fill in the void if I ever moved the tank. It wound up looking so good that you couldn't tell the tank wasn't actually sitting on tile.

I see no reason to tear everything down just so you can ruin the brand new carpet with the weight of the tank.

I agree. Chances are, any carpet that is under a tank would not match the rest of the carpet once the tank is removed. a new piece patched in later would probably match better. Just save a big piece of scrap carpet and pad to patch in later. If you decide to move your tank, do a search. There are a lot of opinions including, I think some people would say that a sand bed needs to be replaced after so many years anyway and this would be a good time to do it. Others might say drain down to the sand so as not to disturb the layers, move the tank on the stand to properly support it, and get it back up and running before you have much die off. Have much more NSW mixed up ahead of time than you think you would need.

Best of luck.

Thx for the tips guys I think we decided to lay down tile in the den not carpet since the tank is in three and there are little water spills and such anyway, so you guys think I shout run the tile right up to the tank and lay in the last lil bit once we move we also plan on moving in the next 2 years if that makes a difference

I hate to take your thread, but we also want to change out the carpeting.

What type of tile do you recommend?

Thanks,

ERICN if you want the illusion that it's sitting on the tile then yes, run it right up to within 1/4" or so of the stand. They make a special tile caulking that matches popular grout colors (white, tan, ltgray, dkgray etc.) that you can use on the last row of tile where it meets the tank. I used this all around the base of my tank so I didn't have to worry about water spills running under the tank and soaking into the carpet.

wife of Troy182...

Anything at Home Depot or Lowes that strikes your fancy will do as long as it's ceramic tile. 12" tiles are easier in my opinion to work with if you are DIY. I also think they look better on smaller rooms, but that's just me. I have since ripped up the tile in tile in the above pics and am re-doing the entire living in the larger 18" tiles.
