Hello friends,

am new to the hobby and i need your help on some things please.
I currently have a 600 liters freshwater tank with overflow and sump and i want to change to a reef tank.

The way my tank is now, is impossible for me to change anything on my current overflow. I cannot replace it, or add extra one, or do any changes on it. My current overflow has dimensions of 25x15x30cm with a single drain hole of 32mm pipe taking the water down to the sump. Am i gonna be ok with that? Cos some friends told me that am gonna need either a bigger overflow or my overflow to have 2 holes taking the water down to sump.

And my second question concerns the sump. What is the minimum size that my sump must have? is there a ratio between sump and tank? or sump and overflow?

If the sump works for your freshwater setup then it will work for your switch to marine. You won't regret having a bigger sump - increased volume = increased stability as well as providing a bigger place to put the stuff you don't want to look at, but as long as your current sump doesn't overflow when the power is off it will be fine.

The overflow will work as well. Why wouldn't it? There are other options (beananimal or herbie style) but what you have is just a good old Durso drain. It will not flow as much as either of the others but it works just fine. In fact, it is the only type I have ever used in nearly 30 years of marine fish keeping.

There are many options in how to set things up and what equipment you will need. Keep asking questions and we'll keep giving you answers. (oftentimes conflicting answers, but answers nonetheless)
