Tell me about your success running a DSB. .

Rod, the clam is a crocea. He is attached to a fairly large rock in the sand. I tried to rotate the rock to get him off the sand, but he keeps moving back to the sand . He just blows the sand around and creates a hole when he opens and closes.

hey racenrich i see the GBTA thats in my tank now! hah

well as far as DSB goes I have about 4 inches in my 75 and i made a refuge under the tank with about 5- 6 inches of south down with a mangrove forest and cheato and stuff. its so cool.......but anyways man that thing is amazing. i monitored everything for a few months after i put it on the tank and everythign i was haveing problems with went away and algae is gone. another thing to look into i would recomend is the tunze protein skimmers. they work really good with a dsb setup becuase they are plankton freindly and actually work by difusion--those germans are pretty inventive its a really weird design but its awesome!! they're kind of expensive though.........

Naw, I'm just going with a big enough skimmer. An ASM g3, or Octopus, or something like that. Money friendly, but still big enough.

Rod mentioned this but I think it needs to be brought up again. Flow is extremely important. No matter if you decide to go BB or shallow sand or DSB, flow equals success. Getting the waste into the water column and to the skimmer is one of the most important planning points in setting up a long lasting tank.
I started out with southdown and whenever I went out to meet people or to a LFS I tried to get a little tupperware cup of sand. There is a lot of action now in my DSB.

absolutely! Great thing about sand is a little goes a long way. I'll have some ready for you tomorrow.

I'd like to mention one more thing. I've seen a ton of posts bashing DSB's and likewise BB's. "DSB crashed my tank!" "I've lost all my color with my BSB" Most all of this is caused by the person on the dry side of the glass and has nothing to do with what type of SB you have. Just my 3 cents.

I agree wholeheartidly. And you make good points about what leads to success. If you've got a good plan and know how to approach it, you can make BB, SSB, or DSB successful. Thanks to alot of reading, and your opinions here to help me take the best approach on my new DSB tank.
