temp swinging :(

I've set up my new 90gal & invested in a temp probe. I've been unable to keep thetemp in the display stable & it will drop to the mid to high 60's F quite often. I've got an Ebo 250W & two old Ebo 150W's in the sump as well as a Mag 12 running my skimmer. Mag 7 is my return (external) & it is plumbed to in-line to a 40w UV. Any thoughts?

I'd check the heaters to see that they produce heat, and to calibrate their temperature indicators. You could dump them in a bucket with a powerhead one at a time, and work from there.

That doesn't sound right. Are you sure that temp probe works? When I had a 90, (2) 150W Ebos were plenty to keep the temp @ 78 and I didn't have a big Mag12 pump. It also takes awhile to drop into the 60s.

Have you compared the temp with a thermometer?

It get down to 40-F some times there i still said to check to be sure they come on like Bertoni said.

Good point. I assumed his house is heated. -40F would be a block of ice.

May be on the cold side.... some keep the house temp at around 60F or lower when they not home.
We don't know... sushiman where you keep your home temp at?

yeah it dips into the 60's during the night & low to mid 70's during the day. We usually have "soft" winters by Canadian standards here in Vancouver but this year we have an abundance of the white stuff ( I was born in the Yukon & have no love for it unless I'm skiing- snowshovels suck!) I don't know about the probe, I'll do a side by side comparison the next time I make a vat of new saltwater. I never had temp issues in the past & I was using just the two 150w's. The 250w is definatly working good, I burned my arm nicely yesterday when I was working in the sump:smokin:

Just be sure you have enough water circulation around the heaters or they will not keep the water warm enough . Is a auto shut off on the heaters if the get to hot so they will turn them self off if not cool with new unheated water.

My suggestion is to purchase a temperature controller. I have a Medusa HC-150 (http://sealifesupply.com/medusa.htm) controller that alarms when the temperature drops or rises 3 degrees from the set point.

Secure the temperature probe in your main tank and plug the 250-watt Ebo-Jager into your controller. Set the heater’s thermostat a few degrees above the set point. To prevent hysteresis, the controller will raise the temperature about half a degree above the set point before turning off the heater.

Do separate the heaters so they will not shut each other off.

My bet is that one of your thermostat-heaters is failing.

I have (2) 250watt EBO's on total of about 300gals. They have no problem keeping my tank stable at 78F.
I had some EBO's leak after time, visible moisture in the glass tube.
