Temperature Problem

Here's the first mistake.

My lights are not yet on a timerl. ( they will be this evening) t5 setup 8x54w. I noticed a fluctuation in temperature. 77- 82 degrees.
Yesterday I had my lights on for 13 hours straight, actinics and daylights. A litte long I now. By the time I went to bed at 10 30 the temperature was 83 degrees. This Morning I woke up and it is at 80. My heater is set for about 76-77. I did not put my lights on today b/c I want to make sure my temp goes down.

Any Suggestions.

I have a wave tank- Right side is fully covered w/ glass top, and the left side is 1/2 covered. I dont want my whole tank covered.

In my tank I just added:

30 turbo snails
15 hermits
1 yellow tang
algae blenny
4 green chromis

Could bump your heater up to 79-80 to keep it more stable on the low side and use a fan when the lights are on to keep it from spiking on the high side. Try to shoot for stablility, thats more important than temps you are showing us

Yes I am trying. I am going to monitor it this weekend and hopeuflly get it stable by the weekend.

Is this going to affect my fish??

Big swings like that are very stressful to your fish and it also effects your PH, if you have livestock in there get it stable quick

But 85 degrees is a lethal temperature for a reef. I balance at 79 to give myself one degree more leeway, especially with summer coming. Get a pillar fan for your sump area and put it on a timer right with the lights. Someone has come out with a lovely power strip with a timer included. Check your lfs.

No, 88.71 F is the lethal recorded temp. The lower 80s temps and bleaching etc. is determined by average temps. If the upper limits fall well outside of an average temp, bleaching will occur. The same applies to the aquarium. If temperatures are maintained around 80-82 degrees, then the corals are less likely to bleach at temps of 85. The temp swing that bmallia experienced is a bit much, though. Try to limit swings to no more than 4 degrees F.

Corallife is the powerstrip w/ that capability

I have that coming in today.

I can get some fans blowing down in the sump area. DO I direct it toward the water in the sump or just have Circulation down there?

Direct it toward the water. Do be aware that this can significantly increase evaporation.

Thank you

I can even put one under my lights. I will have to play around with it this weekend.
