I justed tested my backup and it's a Smart ups-1000 fully charge it ran a tunze 6045 8w for a little more then 4hr with no problems. I was think about removing the battery and connecting a marine battery to it instead and see how long that would run for.:)

good stuff! where did you buy it from and for how much? I might head over to fry's tomorrow after work.

I connected my APC 1000 to two car batteries.
It makes them run for DAYS!!!
Granted you want to rip the little beeper out of the unit after an hour.

Usually you need 2 Batteries because most units are 24Volts not 12.
So you have to wire them in series.

Looks like we have the same model. So it take 2 batteries and yeah I think it may run a little longer but the beeping was driving me:rollface:

A little off topic but I have a APC 1250 for free if you can figure out how to make it works :D ..

That's easy to do? Or do you have to do a mod?

If you wire them in series you'll get 48V. If you wire them in parallel you'll get 24V. The only way you can step it down to 12v is by using a voltage divider. Does it the apc 1000 needs 48V?

Perry, car batteries are 12v, and if you put two 12v in series, you get 24v.

Phong, I am interested in trying out your free APC (can't resist anything free :D).

Here is a quick shot of mine in action.

Just run the wires to where they normally plug into the batteries

Before any of you guys are crazy enough to do something like this try not to follow whats pictured here. As you may not know, you have a higher chance of electricuting yourself with DC current then AC. With 24volts on 2 batteries thats a lot of amperage there!

First take notice that there are no fuses anywhere on any leg on the battery and in between the battery. I'd suggest you put on in place. Second put fuses between the batteries and also on the terminals where it plugs into the ups. Third don't use automotive battery unless you got a fat wallet. The anode side of the battery is made from very thin cell walls that are designed to have a very very high surface area. The more surface area it has the more electrons flow from anode to cathode (ie higher amperage.) Thats why car batteries are good for starting. However you run them down long enough and there won't be any material left to reverse the cycle! Thats why they make marine deep cycle batteries (thicker walls and are designed to be run to a deep discharge but less starting amps). Ideally you'd want a golf cart battery which allows deep discharge and ability to quickly recharge.

I"m not saying this idea sucks (I have 4 deep cycle marine battery hooked up to my APC UPS 3000), I'm just saying you need to be careful. Also for reference, apc ups 3000 idles at 1amp with nothing plugged in, will power a 500-1000watt holegen lamp (I can't remember the wattage of my floor light) for 8 hours roughly from a full charge before beeping.

There is a 70A fuse just before it goes into the UPS forgot to mention that.
Yes, I prolly should have one on the series leg too.

This was not a DIY write up.
I did not include all the details of what you see.
Just a quick camera shot of what I have.

While it's not impossible to shock yourself with 24 volts it's not that easy either. Yes there's a lot of amperage but unless you have really wet skin the resistance of your skin should be high enough to not get hit, but always becareful!

I thought about going deep marine but they were too expensive and these have worked for 3 years with excellent results, they were $20.00 each at Walmart.

If you have a nice large 3000 unit they don't beep till they are almost dead.
The cheaper units we have beep as soon as the AC power is cut, wether the battery is at 100% or 20%

we use 2 Interstate Workaholic Deep Cycle 8D batteries paired with 750W inverters. The batteries are 19.5" X 11" X 9.5" (and are heavy as heck). They are borderline too heavy for one person to carry. It took two of us to load them into our truck where we ordered them from, but I was able to unload them by myself when we got home.

They are sold for RVs and are the biggest 12v deep cycle batteries that we could find last year (during the heat wave and power outages).

With what was posted about APCs using 24v systems, I could/should have gone after the 24v forklift batteries (that were bigger than the ones we have now). We have an old APC 1000 that I could have scavenged for the inverter, but thought it was 12v based.. oh well, that is what I get for "thinking" :)

This is a very expensive thread for me. After reading about all these big UPS, I went out and picked up this APC 3000 today. There goes my hard save money for the up coming Aussie acan colony :(.
