One day I hope I can be as much help to someone in this hobby as Tomoko is to me.
Thanks a-mil:)
All corals are in the 20g doing well and the pea soup in the75 is slowly clearing.Im going to wait on the blackout as a last resort.

You're welcome. The purpose of our reef club is to help each other. I am glad that I can be of a service.

I wish I could have helped you more to improve your lighting situation. Maybe someone else can help here. Until you can save enough to buy a nice MH system or T5, you can add 4 more NO light bulbs a la Mariner's style.

Can someone explain to Sean how to build a simple (and inexpensive) wooden canopy for a 75 gallon tank and install sockets, etc. for six NO fluorescent bulbs or help him build one? Something that he may be able to retrofit MH lighting with MH kits later. Sean currently has a two bulb fixture sitting on top of his glass covers.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Tomoko

Sean,
I originally bought an ALL-glass double tube fluorescent light with glass tops with my 75. Before I ever used them, I realized that's not what I wanted for a reef.
Sooooo.... I built a canopy out of 1x8 shelving. I basically made a box, open on the bottom and back. I braced the inside of the corners with 2x4's. If you're thinking of going with MH later, I'd use wider boards or plywood to make a higher canopy. You can find plans for building aquarium canopies on the web by doing a Google search.
Eventually, I mounted 3 shop lights in this hood, giving me 6 40 watt fluorescent bulbs -- a run a couple of actinic bulbs, a couple of daylights, and a couple of 10k's. You can get dual tube shop lights at Home Depot, Lowe's or even Walmart for less than $10. You can also use the Daylight bulbs from HD or Lowe's -- just get the ones that are rated 5,500 to 6,500 Kelvin - for a few dollars each. My whole lighting system, canopy, fixtures and lights cost about $100.
I have over thirty species of corals that are thriving with this lighting.
HTH,
Mariner

You could always use the two NO as actinic or get new actinic bulbs for them. I suppose a 250 watt MH bulb with a good reflector would be good for most softies in a 75 not to mention energy/heat efficient. hellolighs.com would be a good site to check out, they have 2 aro vho ballast for 30$. I used two on my 120 for supplemental extra light, hope this helps some.

Thanks guys!
Im goin to start my canopy in the next few days.Do you think 10 inch stock would make a tall enough canopy if i decided to go MH with 2 fans?

Here's the simple canopy design by Melev:

I think that the canopy design that allows the front panel to flip up is more convenient, though. I recall 8ball had a thread that showed how he built his canopy that did that for his 72 gallon tank. Search our forum using the name "8ball" and you may be able to find it.

I found this one in 8Ball's gallary - it's upside down but you can get the general idea from it.

Most of the time you try to keep the bottem of the bulb anywhere from about 6" to 10" off the surface of the water. This means canopys for Mh tend to be about 15" tall. But it depends alot on your reflectors. I agree with Tomoko Clamshell canopys are so much easier to access the tank. Here is a shot of a couple canopys.. Might help give you some ideas.

Hey Guys!
I ran into a little problem with my canopy.I cut the bords for the top out of 1by 12 and they bowed. If I wet them and put some weight on them will they straighten out?
Thanks!

Nope sorry.. Finding good wood has been a real challenge the last couple of years.. The biggest problem is they dont dry the wood very well.. As soon as you pull it out of the stack set it off by itself for a day or two it dries out a lil more and You end up with Very Bowed stock..

Try using some maple or atleast some good spruce. You probably got yellow pine.. That stuff always seems to bow. Not sure of your design.. But if you can just use some 3/4 plywood. If you look at my 60 gallon cube the canopy is made of hardwood ply I just built it so any plywood edge would have trim on it..Good plywood is Very stable and pretty cheap too. HTH

Yea I guess im going to have to get a sheet of 3/4 ply.The conopy is 3/4 done and looks good!I was going to put 12 inches of the top and the front on hinges for the lid but thats the two pieces that bowed.Ill have to get a hole sheet of ply to get the top half length(52)and the front(50)and figure out something for trim.I would have used 3/4 ply in the first place but I dont have a table saw.I can do it with a circular saw just not as good!

Will I have a T-maxx,sportmaxx and a mini-t!

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I couldn't help but notice 8Ball has a wooden canopy for his 46 bowfront.
I've been looking everywhere for a wood canopy like that and all I can find is plastic.

How in the world did you do that?

Hey Tomoko!
I got rid of my pea soup! After 4 days of blackout.I took all the cover off only to still find pea soup.I read a artical about somebody who had the same problem and had used a uv sterilizer with no luck or so he thought.AFTER you use uv or a blackout you have to clean up the water!I added a micron filter and dosed it with seachem clarity and it cleared in a hour and has been so for 24hr now.I built a a simple skimmer with a tall water bottle, power head and cup.It looks hideous but i think its working. It makes foam, sometimes discolored.Well I guess it will do til I find a good one thats not too high or a used one.

Thanks agin!
