Our rubbermaid tub is a large one, but we had no problem adding the baffles. I could see it being more of a problem if the container is flimsy.
 
RDMPE - Thanks for the idea. I have been scoping out some skimmer's and I didn't realize how expensive they can be. I was looking at some of the DIY articles on skimmers and think that I can go that route. I am pretty handy with tools and stuff.. I know, I know, probably a disaster waiting to happen and going to cost me way to much money in the long run...

Anyone one built one of these and have any success with it?

baffles in a tub like that, Micki, did your hubby have to cut the corners of the edge at the bottom? The tubs I have seen sort of narrow as you get towards the bottom.. I won't be buying a tub the size of yours (not enough room)... I really wish I would of known this place existed before I started 15 months ago!!:mixed:
 
MaximusUSG, yes he cut them. He made cardboard templates then cut the baffles. I can see if he still has the templates and take a pictues of that.
 
Micki - The aquarium is going on stand by until some fundage rolls around. In the paper up here someone has a 180 gallon tank with lights and acc. for 350... My wife said she would take a ball bat to it if I brought it home. :( Any way.. Going to rid out the stuff in the wet/dry and hope the my undergravel will be enough of a biological filter... Just so I understand this right... the plumbing for a refug. is overflow into a skimmer and then the skimed water goes through the refug. and then from there through some baffles and then a return pump? Is that right or am I missing something?
 
Sorry to hear your wife didn't like that great deal. :(

Some have a fuge/sump combined. Mine is seperate sump/fuge. My fuge overflows into the sump. The skimmer sits in the sump and skims the water. The water thwn flows over the baffles and goes back into the main tank.

Maybe someone else can explain it better until I can have my husband get to it. He has already gone to bed.
 
Hi Micki, still in a holding pattern on my tank. My goni is on it's last leg. Only has a couple branches left. I have this funny looking plant growing on my live rock. It looks almost like clover only really light green. Any idea what that might be? My polyps and mushrooms are doing great. A friend of mine and I are going to try our hands at building a skimmer. Going to help him make refug from an old tank. Practice with his to perfect mine. That's not a good friend is it??? :D Between the 2 of us we should get it nailed down quickly.. I have a question about the sealant to use. Everyone on here talks about the "Weld on 4".. This friend bought some silicone made by All-Glass. It says that it can be used in fresh or salt water. Can you (or anyone) shed some light on that one???
 
Maximus, if you are bonding acrylic, you need to use Weld-On #4 or #16. If you are bonding glass, you need to use silicone (without mold inhibitors.

I like to ask you a question about your carbon canister. I have always thought about using a house filter but my experience has been carbon always floats, which brand are you using?

I bought the 44 pound bag. I've sold a few pounds to some fellow reefers and they have been happy with it as well. Good Luck! :)

Micki, I have an update for you. I have removed the under gravel filter and the crushed coral. I have added a sand bed and converted my wet/dry into a make shift refug. I have about 5-6 inches of live sand in there too. I also have purchased some macro for the fug. Nitrates are still real high, :mad2: getting ready to do another 25 gallon water change tonight. Hoping to bring an end to the nitrate madness... Not sure what else to do about the nitrates.. Water changes and wait I suppose.. Trying to remain cool...:)
 
Hey Micki, I saw your post about your corals coloring up in Marc's thread. Just thought I would pass on what I was just told by a friend here that has the prettiest corals I have ever seen. He said he reduced his MH lighting time from 10 hrs to 8 and all the colors darkened up. Just a thought. I 'm not sure what your lighting schedule is.

Macroalgae should help with the nitrates too. Basically fertilizer...

When you say "darkened up" are you saying they improved or got worse?
