She just does not like him, mine did that to the one that was in between the first one that she mated with and the third one that I have now that she mates with. The male got older and that is why it is just starting to happen now

Thanks Marc.

Any ideas what might have happened? The male was very large when I got him 2 years ago. Could he have died of old age? What about the females actions? Fighting or begging him to live?

The female matured and as she did so did the male and they just are not working out together

Typical marriage.......LOL!!!

Now my female is acting really weird. She is swimming to the top of the tank and just hanging out there. She sometimes swims against the current with no trouble and sometimes lets the current take her for a ride. She looks fine other wise. She will then swim to the bottom and fight with her reflection. I wonder if she is in mourning?

All the other fish look like they are doing fine.

That is normal, Micki.

Normal for the loss of a mate or normal for mandarins in general? She never did that before the male died and I never saw the male do that before.

Her activity at the top of the water. One of mine did that often. I think she was feeding from stuff at the surface, but you can never be sure with mandarins. :)

It was just strange since I had never seen either of them do that before. Then the male is gone and now she goe to the top. Kind of weird. Only in the world of mandarins... :)

Hi, I have a few questions... they're probably stupid but that's ok, I'm retarded.

Back on like the second page i saw you had some plates covering the sand n stuff, and I was just wondering why.

Also, I'm curious about the acrylic stands... are those just to give more options for aquascaping and elevating the rock... or is there a biological reason behind it?

"One other thing, the tights in the tank are filled with CC that was in my 55. I am using that to seed the tank. I will bremove those in a few weeks!" What do you mean by seed the tank?

Thanks

Hi there, no question is a dumb one. :)

The plates covering the sand were actually holding down the garbage bags as I filled the tank to prevent a sand storm. It worked like a charm! I had very little sand storm. :)

The acrylic stands were for aquascaping and elevation of the rock only. I have taken all but one of them out now.

The sand I put in the new tank was new sand. It was also sugar fine aragonite sand. The old sand was crushed coral. The old sand was also full of pods and other life. I wanted to give the new sand a jump start on the biological system but I did not want to mix any of the crushed coral sand so I used the stockings filled with the crushed coral to do just that.

Hope this answers your questions. Feel free to ask more. :)

Thanks, the helps out a lot! What made you choose the fine aragonite sand over crushed coral... or is it more of an aesthetic thing?

Glad it was helpful. Feel free to ask anything any time. :)

I was tired of the crushed coral look. The sugar fine reminds me more of Destin. :)

Got any new pictures to share, Micki?

I will try to make a good effort to take some. We are in the middle of remodeling out house and I have pretty much focused on that for the past few months.
