The Babies Are Here!!!!

You could use wedding veil or a filter bag cut up. I am not sure how to attach it though.

I realize I'm out fo my league when it comes to Mr and Mrs. Call.
So take my words with a gain of salt
But there is one CON to this method. given the young are still so small and weak the mesh bag or veil appoarch may not work if they get to close they very well may just get sucked to the mesh with enough force not to be able to free themselves therefor dieing. then in the morning you rind them stuck just thinking they died in the tank. I lost many angels this way until I witnessed one get stuck.

A turkey baster would work great I would not remove the cave and every time you want to feed them cuase I'm sure it stresses the hell out of them. Imagine your house being ripped fromt he foundation everytime somone wanted to feed you. You could also get some cheap fake plants weigh them down with fishline sinkers and that would get them out fo the cave sooner.

Now before people get on my case yes I'm new to the Slat water breeding thing. but I have been breed ing and raising freshwater for 15 years everything that I have stated above are methods used in my ventures with Freshwater not slat. I motored on in an effort to help and maybe open a few more doors for a succesful brood this time or next time around.

I'm Dyslexic so sorry about all the reversed letters and mispelled stuff it's hard to catch when I type in mass like this

JMC, thanks so much for the advice. I will try some of your suggestions, like putting something on the return to make the flow slower. I'll have to try this in the morning though, because I want to keep an eye on the temp. For now they are all in the cave and the lights are out. So I think they will settle down and may become more brave by morning. I'm also not going to move the cave anymore, I think they have been through enough, poor little things. :p

Oh, and brine shrimp eggs are bubbling away, so they should have fresh food in the morning.

Here are some more pictures of the babies in their new home! They are now in the cave, but before they darted in there I managed to take a few shots. In the close up I counted 30 babies, but when I took this shot I had some more in another corner. Surely I can get at least 5 out of this batch, right?

I have decapsulated brine shrimp eggs bubbling away, so they should have fresh food tomorrow morning.

.....I'm going to bed, this mama is tired...and I thought having two was bad....:eek1:

ok since the tank isn't bare the fish will hide "in the cave" an instinctive reaction. At this point I wouldn't take the stuff that's in there out. Also in terms of the "filtration" this is trickier because youhave things in your tank. if you have an emnpty tank you can essentially accomplish filtration vis siphoning the uneaton food after the 5x daily feedings and replacing the water along with one big daily water change. Then use an air lift or sponge filter in the corner to provide airation. If you go the sponge filter route then it has to be cleaned after every feeding also.

Now to your situation. Feed them in the dark and use a point source light like a flashlighr behind the cave. So dim the lights in the room. Don't make it tiotally dark or you'll spook the fish. then use a bright flashlight as a point source light shining through/out of the cave into the tank. It shoudl attract the bbs towards the fry.

Good luck and contrats again the babies.

Thanks Jerry, I will certainly try your idea. However, this morning they were out of the cave!! :bounce1: I turned on the lights, and then turned off the pump. Didn't seem to scare them as the natural light in the room was pretty bright. I sucked up some baby brine shrimp and squirted it right in the middle of the babies, being very careful and going slowly so not to scare them or blow them around. All the babies seemed to eat up the shrimp with enthusiasm, so I was very happy to see that. I left the pump off for a while and some even ventured out of the fake plant. I didn't see any dead babies this morning so we are doing good so far. I know we have a long ways to go though.

 Well, here are some more! I did lose 4 more babies this weekend, but that is to be expected I guess. Still hard when you see their little bodies on the bottom. :sad1: My shrimp hachery is now filled with millions of baby brine shrimp, so they had a feast this morning.

As you can see they are getting more brave and venturing out more.

Video of fry eating!!!

Video of fry eating!!!

I took this video with my Point 'N Shoot camera, so it's not good. But you can still see the little tikes moving around eating.

 I'm happy to report that there has been NO casualties in the past 48 hours!!! Of course the real test will be to see how many I have a week from now......I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I have noticed there is more competition for the food now. Sibling trying to out swim the other sibling for the food. I figure the more aggressive ones will be the survivors, though I put plenty of food in the tank for everyone to get their fill if they really want it. Again, we'll see how many there are this time next week.

One week old!!!!

One week old!!!!

The babies are one week old today (well, from when the father spit them out). No new deaths to report, but I know we are approaching that critical 10 day period. Meaning if they havn't been getting enough nutrition from me with the feedings then this is about when they start dropping like flies. Let's hope I don't lose to many.

Anyway, here are some more pics that I took today and I do have a video I will post, but I need to upload it and that will take a little time. The last picture turned out so good I just had to share it right away!!! (It was a further away picture and I just cropped.)

This video is better than the last one, but you might want to turn the sound down, for some reason the music came out pretty loud, sorry.
