well, now the pump is going on our 75g. apparently there's a flat spot on it and everytime the power goes out it kicks off and we (by we i obviously mean Jesse) have to tear apart the pump and force it to start again.

so, we're looking to either:

(a) find a decent pump for cheap

or

(b) sell the whole tank and get out of the hobby

thoughts??

Aqua World has a bunch of used pumps at a good price. I picked one up there and was very happy with it.

I could sell you a nicer external Little Giant 4-MDQX-SC for $100, but you probably don't need that good of a pump for a tank your size...Mag 9.5 should be just fine. If you are interested, let me know.

There is a guy on Craigslist right now selling a brand new pump for $60 I think. It is listed under the 150g saltwater tank for sale I believe.

check out a 9.5 mag for $60 plus shipping from NJ- thread on used goods area by mheaven.

How about a replacement impeller? Are you sure there's nothing binding or causing a 'vapor lock'?

If its a mag, and you've handled it allot, you can get a sporadic short from where the wire enters the unit. This causes the unit to just shut off. Sometimes it can be restarted by 'bumping it', but this is a temp fix. The electrical connection is wearing down, and the pump will need to be replaced. Mags should never be carried/handled by their cord for this reason. I wish they were reinforced somehow. GL

Does your pump go in your sump or do you have it plumped externally

If its in the sump, I have a used mag 9.5 I believe I can let go very cheaply (probably $20). It comes with a caveat though. It developed a very very slight leak in the seal (this is when I had it plumbed externally). Well, I had to fix it and since I couldn't get the seal to fix and didn't have any other options (needed it done then), I permanently sealed it with epoxy / caulk (can't recall specifically). It is nothing pretty to look at as I wasn't worried about aesthetics - I was just worried about stopping it from leaking.

It works fine - I used it on my old 37g and to clean it, would just run it in vinegar. I think its about 2 years old.

While I used it externally after my fixing the leak, I personally would feel more comfortable telling someone to use it in a sump. Just know that you will never be able to change the impeller - hence why I would sell it so cheap

Jon,

If they don't want it, I'd be interested. I'm thinking about driving my 72 bowfront with a mag 9.5, with something a lot bigger running a closed loop.

Nate

Ok, its yours if you want it for $20.

just noticed one more thing though. Because I was running this externally, I had used some stainless steel pipe rings (I know thats not the technical term but hope you know what I mean) to ensure a tight fit where I had the incoming PVC connected onto the pump.

I had sealed most of this area with caulk as well when I had the pinhole leak (guess I was just paranoid about having it leak again because, ummmmm, the wife was not happy with the first leak). But just noticed the screws for the stainless steel rings are rusty. Guess they were not stainless. So before using in a sump, you would need to cover the screws with caulk (or cut the screws and rings off - caulk would be easier IMO but thats your call). Not a big issue but wanted to let you know in advance if you want it

Thanks
John
