Just wondering,
If you have to choose the best Protein Skimmer for your 300 gallon fully-packed Sps tank and money is not the subject.
Which one will be your first option?

I was going to say that also...although all I know is everyone says it's the best never used one. But if money was no object I would buy one

Is Bubble king the best choice because its capacity is so huge that it almost has the same amount of water as your tank??

No, bubbleking is the best because none of the other skimmer makers seem to realize that big low rpm pumps work best for needlewheel skimmers. With a pump with a huge impellar, you get huge tip speed, so it will make tiny bubbles. You also get a ton of flow, which means its sucking in a TON of air. They've used a pump thats even more extreme than the Sequence Dart as far as flow/watt goes, that runs lower rpm with a bigger impellar, and matched a big body to it.

Nicely put Rich...if you've ever seen the impeller on one of the BK pumps you'll see what he's talking about. There's simply nothing comparable, but most don't have $3000 to shell out on a skimmer.

boy did you just open up a can of worms!

This is off the BK 650....$6000

BK's also run off Red Dragon pumps....you do the math

I honestly dont think theyre impellar design is great. I think it would work better with a larger impellar, vanes in the middle, and pins on the outside.

The outside pins are the ones doing the most chopping, as theyre moving much faster than the inside ones. I dont think the inside ones really make much difference.

The big difference is the big flow pump, as opposed to small powerheads.

I looked into getting a bubble king and talked to someone here in Canada and was told that it would be a minimum of 4 months to get one and that was just a guess as it could be longer. Not sure what the wait time is where you are from but keep that in mind with the bubble king.

I would seriously look at the Deltec AP1004 with the self cleaning head. The self cleaning head is what makes it really stand out above the competition. It is something I have always wanted to try but couldn't see being able to justify the expense to my wife (It would be hard to hide).

DocG, you have to remember, that for the price of the AP1004 with the selfcleaning head, you're up to $5K. The AP1006 is only $6500ish.

Its also over 3 times the size (10*10=100, 6*6=36, plus an additional 6" of height), and has 2 more pumps.

The real question is, are they the best skimmer for the $$ (IE, barring wierd size constraints, is there another $xxxx skimmer that would do a better job?)

I really dont think so. Some sort of custom sequence dart NW monster woudl do better.
