The Continuing Adventures of Tim (Supermantis)

Tim has inspired me to get a Mantis Shrimp.
I've always loved animals, and keeping them as pets, but I've never been as intrigued by an animal as I am with tim and his fellow Mantis Shrimp.

I too have been inspired by Tim's misadventures and am hoping to take on the offspring of one stomatopod who has suffered eviction and persecution. The idea is to set up a ten gallon "kitchen castaway" tank for all types of 'unwanted' reef exiles.
Tim is almighty and very wise, for his influence is far reaching and omnipresent.
Thank you, Tim.

That's great Spiff and SMP! Though you may have to learn pretty quickly who's really the pet... ;) Tim's never mentioned emmigration, but if he gets the urge, it's good to know he has friends across the border, eh? :D

So I mentioned earlier that this was a pretty big month for Tim. He's had a few really great guests over for dinner (some have even made their dinner invites into extended stays), he made Thread of the Month for the April RK Mag and he had a really long molt (to accomodate his newly enlarged ego).

I thought it was time for me to finally get about posting some pics of all this...

So the molting usually just results in me being pictureless for a few weeks, but this time at the end of his molt I was rewarded by another Tim souvenier

To celebrate his coming out of hiding, Scalare provided a veritible smorgasborg of delights for Tim to feast upon (Thanks!). I took this opportunity to teach Tim how to properly beg while the treats acclimated

Got some excersize in as well

Buffet time...

This gave BDE v.3 and the PinCushion a reprieve of sorts. While the PinCushion (pencil urchin) gets perched upon at least 2 times a week since entering Tim's domain, he has yet to receive any damage - save for the single spine seen in this pic of the BDE v.3

Tim is a world-dominating creature of habit though, the snails are almost always the first to go. I watched him crawl over or past several hermits (and he took a close-up pounce-stance on a bumblebee snail) before he settled down to a meal of astrea.

He took a break while playing with his food and I was able to get a close-up of the damage to that point. He came back five minutes later (after chasing the BDE v.3 away) to finish the meal

It's always humorous (for me at least) to watch him position prey for the perfect strike. So this time I thought I'd share a bit of video as well. If you want to watch Tim play with his dinner guest, check out this video.

Enjoy,

DM & Tim

While at IMAC this weekend, I went to check out the IMAX showing of Deep Sea 3D down at Navy Pier (Awesome IMAX presentation, highly recommended). And they had a nice segment on a mantis. Sucker even held his ground against an octopus.

For a second there I though Tim made it to the big screen. But this impostor couldn't hide the second eye very well.

I've searched the past five pages of this thread trying to determine what BDE stands for, because in my business, when I hear BDE, I think "Borland Database Engine" (and then cringe...).

Can anyone enlighten me?

BDE = Battle Damage Emerald

One of Tim's favorite hobbies is converting regular (boring) Emerald crabs into custom Battle Damaged varieties. He fancies himself something of an artist in this regard. ;)

I just brought Mitch home from a local LFS, clicky for thread about Mitch , when introduced to his new home he jumped on the biggest turbo in the tank and kept workin him around proping it up on a rock or between rocks for the perfect strike. Unfortuniately Mitch didnt get to the meaty inside for quite some time...i think I clocked it at 6 hours...roughly. It is quite amusing watching them pisition their prey for the perfect strike though!

RSVP on Dinner Date?

RSVP on Dinner Date?

Dear Tim,
Hercules regrets that he can't join you for dinner anytime soon.
Currently too busy having an affair with Wonder Woman. Maybe sometime in the future if the invite remains open.Herc would like to"meat" you also.;)

Hi Tim,
Could you post some of your new pictures in Densityman's photo gallery for those of us who do not have your super powers (I can't seem to open the pictures, but I am on broad band).
Thank you for your exciting adventures and pictures too!!!! May the force be with you.:strooper:

Tim has been in fierce combat with our webhost who seems to be down completely (and has been since at least Sunday). We hope to have them defeated utterly (and the pages/pictures back) today.

I will work on posting some into the gallery if I can get the time today.

Apologies for the red X's (might be time to look for a new host yet again)...

UPDATE: Raptorial appendages prevail again. The domain has been returned to working order and the pictures are again visible. Thanks!

Dav has definitely made the good list.

The stone crab was received well and the packing was the best I'd seen for any creature or coral I've ever received (or shipped for that matter)!

I took some pics last night (he's a hoot to watch), but forgot the camera at home. Tim spent a good deal of time sizing the newcomer up... from a great distance.

'Dozer, as he shall be called, spent 15 minutes before lights-out plowing and carrying sand around the tank to better suit his style. He would collect a load of sand between both rather large claws, then scoop it up, shuffle a few inches away and dump it. He may have just been creating a smokescreen to confuse Tim, because he never did rest/sleep in the hole he excavated.

Assuming the pics turned out OK, I plan on posting some tonight. ;)

Thanks Dav!

This is a good story. I have a damsel that ate my sexy shrimp in my nano so I threw him in the big tank with P fishy (my fat porc puffer who eats everything) who i thought would dispatch justice. Alas no, the damsel is just swimming around like nothing. Today is day three and he is getting very bold. we have bets on how long the brat will survive. any takers on that bet?

I don't know what was more disturbing, The length and detail of your story or the fact that I truely enjoyed it! <lol>

Please keep the stories coming!

The other day, when I was posting to this sight, I heard a very slight, collective shrieking. I turned and looked into my tank. It was the screams of eight terrified margarita snails. They apparently were familiar with the legend of Tim and his terrible exploits. "The horrible carnage!" they were crying. It took me half an hour to calm the tank. They had gotten the chocolate chip star worked up into such a fit that he puked up his gastrointestinal tract. The dottyback was learing and rubbing his pectoral fins together. He is somewhat of a sadist and was enjoying the anxiety of the "lower classes of univalves and echinodermata." "If only I could wield that sort of superpower, this tank would bew mine!" He has apparently caught the world domination bug. Please report one of Tim's humiliating defeats so that I can restore the world order of my tank. Thank You.

I'll have you know that my latest view of your thread just bumped the number of views to 76,000!!! Now, I know you're tempted to give me some kind of "76,000th Viewer" award but, honestly, I can't rightfully accept anything that could otherwise be used to provide an additional vict....er...ego-boost for Tim. (Coincidentally, I notice you've also reached 1,666 posts on RC, so if your soul has already been consumed by Satan and you don't reply back, I'll understand)

Congrats clevengergl! Tim's added you to his NTBEBILT list, for good measure. :)

I don't know that Satan has taken the rebuy option yet or not on my soul... I've been co-opting it to work and storm damage/repair for the past month at least. ;)

All is well in Tim's world.

I have super-cool pics to share (especially of Dav's stone-crab contribution), but alas my Photoshop appears to have a cold and craps out anytime I try to save a file... *grumble*

I'm working on the problem (and by working on it I mean stewwing about it because it defies both logical solution and rebuilds)
