The Ferrari of Cuttlefish

Yep LOL

As soon as I seen the thread title I knew it was gonna be Metasepia!

Chris, was it not one of these going for $200 last year?

In Lembeh, you can see these guys on most dives. Often you will swear that there are none around, but if you sit very quietly on a slope at 30 - 50 feet, suddenly you will notice a clump of muck moving. Approach, and it will bloom before your eyes "walking" along the bottom. Push it and it will jet 5 meters, hit the bottom, turn muck-colored and "disappear".

Eggs are relatively easy to find and there seems to be some synchrony in hatching since every now and then hundreds of 1 inch hatchlings show up in the area.

Photographing these guys is worth the trip alone.

Hmmmm one vacation at a time I am still thinking of the O.cyaneas:smokin:
I have never seen this species offered though a supplier in the US yet. I have been talking to a wholesaler that has been getting some cuttles in. A assume they are bandensis. I am convinced shipping cuttle eggs are the way to go though. There is a horrible loss in shipping live cuttles from what I can see.

Yep, and from what i gather from Richard; the cuttle egg laying has been a bit of a dissaster over here too!

I think I will leave it until August or September and perhaps invest in another batch of baby cuttles. Not as many as seven this time tho! Maybe just 4 would do.....

I was at deep Sea World in scotland yesterday and they have an Eledone cirrhosa tank set up! They are the only scottish octo. They are actually very cool. I need to get my hands on a chiller first tho. Cant go above 15degC!!!! Think a 2nd hand fridge would work with a long pipe curled up inside with water pumped through on a thermostat??????

Expedition to Lembeh Anyone?

Expedition to Lembeh Anyone?

Hmmmm, perhaps an egg-collecting expedition? I would definitely like to dive there just to see one!!! They have been bred in captivity at the Waikiki aquarium...

Colin, a professor of mine has used exactly the method you describe, an old refrigerator as a chiller - he said it works fine. Sometimes you can get real chillersw RELATIVELY cheap in the classifieds too.

Michael

Thanks Michael,

If i found a chiller under about Ã"šÃ‚£100 i would buy it. None for sale have been that cheap. Just the thought of a fridge for Ã"šÃ‚£20 sounds much better!

Well, I have been thinking it through and guess that with a pump on a thermostat, it could pump water through a fridge, perhaps 30 - 50 feet of tubing in the fridge would do.. guess i'd have to drill holes in the door or something?????

Thanks again

Annick

no I hadnt but it was exactly what i was looking for. I seen in local paper that 2nd hand fridges are as cheap as $15 so that seems fine to me :)

Thanks

Thanks Diatom...... There seems to be quite a lot of pros and cons to this idea.

I have pretty much decided to go ahead and have a go and see how it turns out... I am a sucker for stuff like that. At least I tried....

Colin

Colin,

Don't waste your time with the dorm firdge thing. They don't help that much. I am getting much more cooling out of my computer fans than I am my fridge. Plus, the fridge eats up electricity.

Mike

Thanks Mike,
i think im gonna have to bite the bullet and shell out for a chiller!

Hows your stuff doing????

Colin

Everything's going great here Colin. I'm gearing up to move into a new house at the end of the month. I'm going to have to hire someone to move my aquariums since I have a 135 and a 55 gallon. My octo is eating regularly, and I try to get him live stuff whenever possible. He has grown a lot since I first got him, and I heard that the better they are fed the faster they grow. I want to do the cuttle thing again as soon as the octo passes on. The ones I had weren't day active, and were very fragile. I will get my next ones from Richard Stride to make sure they are bulletproof.
You need to post some more movies of yours on Tonmo so I can see how big they are now.

Mike
