The Frogfish Files

Mine started out as a quarter sized spherical egg raft, almost completely transparent. Very hard to see unless the light hit it just right.

Later the eggs became more opaque, and you could see the outline of the individual eggs. The egg raft seemed to form a hollow sphere.

Over the next several days, the egg raft swells, becomes more visible, and becomes denser. Around the 3rd or 4th day, the fish larvae become visible inside the egg, and can be seen to move.

By the 5th day, the larvae are translucent and there is a lot of movement in the eggs. The egg raft begins to disintegrate and spread out with the babies squirming to break free of the goop.

The free swimming babies are hard to see. Very transparent. They darkened up over the next few days.

Good news, bad news...

The bad news...

I started losing larvae at the 5th day after hatching, and they were pretty much gone by the 7th day. I think it was a water quality problem mainly. I had NH3 and NO2 at .5ppm :(

I was doing daily water changes, but probably should have been doing larger amounts. Difficult to do though. I had an airline tube with some mesh over the end, and the babies were so small that they wanted to get stuck on the siphon. What's the trick to changing water and siphoning debris with such small larvae in the tank? Keeping baby discus tanks clean was easier!

The good news...

The frogfish spawned again on Monday evening. Last night, I set up a 10 gallon tank with an AC 350, live rock, and a DIY kreisel. (Went to bed at 4am. Ugh....) The kreisel has a meshed opening for water exchange with the main tank. I figure I can get some diffusion that way to help maintain water quality. Also, I can do a slow drip of tank water into the kreisel to help flush metabolites through. Might even do a Carlsen surge on the main tank, and let the changing water level do continuous water exchange with the kreisel through the meshed opening.

Took some videos of the pre spawning activities and of the egg raft floating around the kreisel. Probably should see some larvae inside the eggs tonight, and should have babies by the weekend.

Sorry it didn't work out this time, but I'm glad to hear your frogfish spawn so regularly - lots of chances to perfect your technique w/ your persistance! Each try is getting you closer to success - I just know[i/] it!

Just a few quick pics for now.

Kreisel contraption with egg raft. The eggs looked close to hatching this morning :)

Awesome thread everyone (I'm still trying to work through it all) Just thought I'd toss in a pic of Edgar
We have had him for almost 2 years ~20 months.
The first year and a half his tank was a via aqua 21g and for the last 2 months an OC 37 cube. the tanks have not been skimmed but have had weekly water changes. Diet has been varied with silversides always being the backbone, but he gets grass shrimp, an occasional peppermint, gut loaded goldfish and when the weather is good and I can collect assorted saltwater baitfish just to keep him hunting.

Marco67 - congrats on the length of time you've been able to keep your angler! I envy your ability to collect saltwater bait fish. Do you quarantine them? For about the first 1.5 years of having Fuggly (my avatar), I alternated between live marine shrimp and saltwater bait fish I got from a place in Florida. Although they quarantined the fish two weeks, I still quarantined them another two weeks just in case. I was nervous about introducing a parasite or something to my frogfish.

You mention gut loaded goldfish and it surprises me that your frogfish has stayed healthy for this long if you have included many of them in the diet. Has it been just an occasional thing? Everything I've read suggests that the feeding of freshwater fish on a frequent basis leads to problems with internal organs....

How long is your frogfish?

He's about 5"
I never new there was any harm in fresh water food, I just always read that there wasn't much nutritional value. I've found that without live feeders he seems to loose interest in eating and it becomes more difficult for me to get him to take silversides, so he gets them 2-3 times per month.
I have yet to QT the collected fish I know it's a good idea but....

Hopefully you can help me.
It looks like my sargassum just laid a 12" long clear sack(Wrapped around a rock).
There has never been a male in this tank. I have had this angler for about 4 months.
Should i just scoop out this clear 12" blob type thing?
The blob consists of lots of water with a kind of film. If i look closely theres thousands of little bumps on the film.

OK have a problem...maybe.

Got a new frog yesterday, and as I was acclimating I think he ingested air w/o me being able to control it. He floated for a few minutes then I added him to the tank, and he swam down and burped. He seems to be fine, but could he still be on a downhill slide?

Anglers fertillize externally. No male means, most likely, infertille. I'd remove mass (maybe save for study).

I'd think that since it expelled the bubble, it should be fine, at least from that problem.

Would he still be floating if he still had the air bubble? What do you mean of that problem? Just common frog deaths etc? Thanks for the quick reply.

He may have more air in his system if he's still floating. Have you tried burping him?
hold underwater, mouth pointed upwards and give a gentle shake (GENTLE)

Yes, just the normal frogfish health (or death problems) :(

No he isn't floating anymore. That's why I ask maybe if he isn't floating he may have got it all out right? I hate the thought of these guys dying they are so dang cool.:(

Here's the new frog. He's pretty cool. Can anyone ID him?

Here's my striatus for fun. "Hairy"

I do see some bumps but I don't think they are defined enough to assume that it is a maculatus. Also, the second dorsal spine looks a bit to small for maculatus. I'm going to say A. pictus.
