The Frogfish Files

I thought I would share a picture of my frogfish. I got him back in December from Reefhotspot.

FYI - I had an A. tuberosus in my tank for a few weeks when my tank flooded while I was on vacation. A fellow reefer took the little guy and put him in his sump. I let the reefer keep the frogfish (this was back in January), and was surprised to find out he had kept it up until a little while ago. The only reason it may have died was that the reefer was doing a big move into a new tank, and the frogfish perished while in the holding bucket. That's a decent period of time for this genus.

On the other hand, I'm trying to get a pair of Lophiocharon or Histiophryne to breed in the aquarium. I think it would be amazing if we could get captive-bred frogfishes, and these two genera seem to be the best candidates for it, as their larvae are benthic rather than pelagic, and are much larger than newly hatched larvae from Antennarius, Antennatus, or Histrio.

Anybody else out there have some frogfishes right now? What do you have?

Hey guys, I see no one has posted on this thread for a few months but im sure people are still following it. I brought home a little angler 4 days ago (LFS had him for a week prior). I could use some ID help, I'm thinking maybe he's a pictus??? I set up a 12g nano just for him for now, he's pretty small.

Here are some pics of my painted angler when I first got him/her. It was almost completely black & just a little over 1" long.

One moth later the angler was turning a dark shade of red.

Then another month later.

I tried feeding guppies but they just head for the overflow. Ghost shrimp are the preferred diet of my angler.

Beautiful color change! Can you post a current picture of him with his dorsal spines erected, like in the photos of him when he was black?

Watching & waiting for a frogfish to do something takes a lot of patients & beer. I'll see what I can do, no promises.

 Yeah, it's a bit like watching grass grow!

That is a nice looking angler. I have absolutely no proof, but from what I've seen of the A. pictus, I swear that yellow is the "default" color. When it can't change to something that exactly matches its surroundings, that seems to be the color they end up. Fuggly (my avatar) started bright red, was black briefly, was a perfect orange match for the orange tree sponge I put in with him and then went yellow when I took the sponge out. Green would have been perfect to match all the Chaeto that was in his refugium home, but I've never seen a frogfish go green.

Hooray - my old thread has returned from the dead!

Here's the mean mugging contest between the scarlet hermit & the angler. The angler won by the way. No hermits were injured in the making of this photo.

ID this one?

ID this one?

After having one frogfish for over a year, I decided I wanted to try it with a second one. This one was sold as an "Antennarius sp." and I am trying to narrow it down further. Can anybody help? Could it be A. commerson?

Here is the best shot I could get of his lure:

This guy took frozen practically out of the bag. I was feeding my old frogfish and thought I would just give it a shot with the new guy, and he took a 1/2" piece of silverside without giving it a second thought. Now I just have to hope he will do something like that about twice a week from here on out....
