The Frogfish Files

The Tigger Pods are described on the website as 2000-2500 microns in size. If that seems like a good size for your babies, I'd give it a try. If you are looking for something smaller yet, the same company has live Herpacticoids at 200-500 microns in size according to the website. Reef Nutrition is a Reef Central sponsor and they have a forum here on RC for you to ask any questions you might have.

I dunno Mr. Ugly, Dr. Marini has seen some mighty ugly fish in his day, so I think your treasures have been royally insulted! :D

OK, how many frogish do you have now?? You trying to catch up to/surpass uberfugu??

The Tigger-Pods actually range from about 30/50 micron up to 2000-2500 microns. All stages of life are packed into each bottle.

How large are the fry?

The fry are in the .5-1mm range I think. They're barely visible in the water.

I tried to video them, but they just look like a bunch of specks reflecting the light.

If I can keep these alive, Rich will be coming over to do a video log with some kind of killer camera setup :)

Cherie, that is not possible. That's why Uber is Uber! :)

Thinking along that line, you might want to contact George at Seawater Express (www.seawaterexpress.com), since he breeds saltwater shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) as a commercial operation and see what he might be able to get you quickly. Providing a variety of choices right now might be your best bet, since so little is known about what specific species of frogfish fry eat.

Has anyone ordered a frogfish from a website before? My LFS doesn't seem to carry them, and I've been wanting to put one in my fuge for a while now, and wanted to know if anyone knows of a reputable online dealer.

Wow baby frogfish that is just incredible. If you could breed and rear frogfish it would be such a positive thing.

Speaking of positives I did manage to get my frogish to eat a piece of krill soaked in selco. He coughed alittle selco cloud twice after but he seemed pretty happy.
I had cut a piece of krill in half but once in the tank I realized that it still looked alittle big for him to eat, so I cut it by half again. He is quite small. I think what helped was that it was the head end of the krill and still had the eyes and some legs on it.

On previous days he would spit out slices of silverside even after he swallowed them so eating this piece of krill was a good step. I do have some saltwater feeder shrimp from liveaquaria, and a population of guppies I am live feeding him also but I want to mix it up and have him trained to thawed too.

I've been on both the receiving and shipping ends of frogfish orders. The results have been mixed.

There is a danger from air ingestion. It doesn't directly kill the froggie but they float in the aquarium and manual burping doesn't always seem to expel the bubble ... they eventually die.

A lot of frogfish carry pathogens. Various bacterial and protozoal infections will manifest after the stress of shipping (often multiple shipments) and varying water conditions. All new additions should go through a 4-6 week quarantine.

I received an angler that had regurgitated 3 fish skeletons in its bag, ammonia was at toxic levels. The fish survived but the stress brought on bacterial infections.

This all being said, sometimes the only way to get a rare fish is via mailorder. I'd use someone with a good guarantee (like our sponsor liveaquaria.com). I would also talk to the owner of your LFS, they can often special order fishes. Anglers aren't always the most popular so they are less likely to be regularly stocked.

They're at it again!! :)

They're at it again!! :)

Just did a 2 gallon water change on the Minibow 7. The 2 froggies decided that it's time to start spawning again!

I'd been feeding the pair gutloaded ghost shrimp every 2-3 days. The female had been looking fat with eggs for the past couple days. Now they're doing the spawning behavior and the vent on the female is swollen and protruding. Should have an egg raft soon!

This time I'm ready too :) I have a 5 gallon culture of live rotifers and another culture of pods. All goodies from Randy and Gresham at Reef Nutrition. I am so psyched! :D

Nothing from the first batch. I didn't have the right food setup for that one.

Well, I was wiped out last night and didn't watch the entire spawning. Woke up this morning and found a nice fat round egg raft floating in the tank :)

I put the raft into a breeder net basket in the tank with an air lift bubbler for circulation. I haven't run mechanical filtration on the tank for a few weeks now. Just an air lift and daily water changes.

Time to feed the rotifers :)

Awesome to hear your having luck with the spawn. I wouldn't mind seeing some baby anglers...

Kyle

Hehe, if I can raise captive bred anglers, you can be sure that I"ll be getting babies out to you guys :) That is, after I get some back to New Alameda Aquatics, Reef Nutrition, and all the other people that have been helping me :)

Does anyone know if there are any books on frogfish/anglers? If so what are they called? With this long thread i figured if anyone would know some of you would know. When i did a yahoo search for books for them nothing came up. Thanks.

Kidzatheart,

Reef Fishes Vol. 1 by Scott Michael is readily available and has an awesome section on frogfishes. The paperback version is not very expensive.

Frogfishes of the World by Pietsch and Grobecker is like the holy grail of frogfish books. It's out of print, and just about impossible to find. Maybe at a university library. I know of one person that somehow got a copy. Wasn't me, though! :(

Be sure to check out the online resources. Frogfish Files here on RC, the frogfish forum on Grim Reefers, Zubi's frogfish site, also Coral Realm.

I can see a few larvae twitching around inside the egg raft tonight :)

Just fed the rotifers again. Getting close :)
