The Great Sand Trade

It's Dr. Goodluck Himself
It's on again. Send 2 cups, it percolates for a few months, get 2 cups back. I've done 3 of these and it's great.

www.thesandtrade.com to sign up.

Hope I'm not breaking any RC rules here. James is great for doing this. It's truly a benefit to all in the hobby who take part.

You pay shipping back and forth that's it.

Some people keep a separate tank with a very deep sandbed that is plumbed into the system, the rest of which is bare-bottom.

but most of the stuff will die in shipping. id feel more comfortable if we locals did it between ourselves. i like trading sand though, you had good results with this in the past?

I wondered why we just didn't do something like this locally. 2 cups of sand, 2 bottles of beer... ;)

The other thing I wondered about was was the possibility of getting something bad in the trade. Some of us quarantine fish, inverts and corals before putting them in the show tank and this practice seems to be like swapping bodily fluids at an orgy. :eek1:

But as long as we're on the subject (sand denizens, not bodily fluids) I've been wondering if anyone has a surplus of those tiny brittle stars that hide in the sand. I think they would be good in my tank, no? I don't think I have any in the sand I got from Reef Depot. (How could I tell?) I've been holding off asking since we haven't started getting our "20 assorted CUC" from them and I'm wondering if they can supply some. I'm assuming that the CUC will consist of snails and hermits.

thanks,
hank

I've posted before on this topic and I'll post again. My display is full of sand anenomies. Dr. Ron once told me don't worry as long as their numbers stay small. Known predators for these don't find there way into our aquariums. They've grown in numbers in such a way that I won't use that sand for another of my tanks.

Getting a bunch of sand will add to the diversity, but realize that some of that diversity could be undesireable. That's a risk you take.

Factually incorrect.

The benefit of a national sand swap is that the diversity of the microorganisms is exponentially greater. James incubates the sand in enormous tubs, which he feeds and cares for over a period of months. Having done this multiple times I can attest that it gets better each time as his experience goes up.

Plus, he checks for flatworms and other nasties before including (though there is always a risk).

A local swap just won't be able to do this. Yes, it is also beneficial to trade cups of sand, and we organized this once at a CMAS frag swap and it was partially successful.

But it's nothing like this.

After a brief hiatus, the annual sandtrade is returning to Reefmonkey. This marks our 4th trade and will promise to be our largest sandtrade yet!

What is it?

The sandtrade is the best opportunity to add diversity to your saltwater aquarium at almost NO cost! By gathering sand from hundreds of aquariums across the country and letting them co-mingle for a couple of months, the resulting diversity is incredible!

How do I start?

Just sign up on this page with your e-mail address: www.thesandtrade.com and let us know you're interested. We will contact you when we're ready for you to ship. When we are, you take 2 cups of sand from your sandbed, bag them up and ship them to the address given. Include $5 to cover the cost of shipping it back, and you're good to go!

How do I ship?

Ship via 2-3 day priority mail. Using a fixed rate envelope or box is cheapest since sand tends to weigh a lot. Make sure you triple or more bag your sand to avoid leakage!! And put the cash or check in a seperate ziploc bag.

When?

Sign up NOW. Deadline is June 15th and you'll be asked to ship some time between June 15th and June 30th. The sand will sit and stew with sand from all over the country and 2 cups of the resulting stew will be sent back to you in October.

Who?

Anyone who has a fishtank and wants to increase their diversity. Newbies, experts and everyone in-between can join. Any type of sand you have, any size tank. The only rule is that you have to know what a flatworm is and know that you DON'T have them. Sand will be thoughroughly examined for flatworms upon receipt and during the curing process.

So tell your friends, tell the folks in your local clubs, tell everyone you know, get signed up for Reefmonkey's 4th Annual Sandtrade. The largest aquarium sand exchange in history!

When you get to reefmonkey, click on the main registration link rather than the one you used. It will give you a registration screen with a confirmation code. :D
