The happy couple

Well still have eggs. Mom and dad are being all protective of them. Doesn't appear any have died off yet so....

That sound pretty good so far, Phil said to get them out in 8 days didn't he? Do you have everything ready for their nursery? I am setting up my 45 gal tank for a pair of clowns, I don't really care what kind, I just want a true mated pair. No really so much for the eggs because I probably will never raise any, I just really enjoy my mated damsels (although I don't really care for damsels much) so I know I would really like a pair of clowns. Enjoy your expierence! Good Luck!

If you don't plan on breeding them, don't waste your money on a "true pair", you can easily create a bonded pair by introducing a large and a smaller clown at the same time. Not sure which ones? Just look at the tank and find the two that seem to be hanging out a lot more than others.

I'm setting up the fry tank tonight. Plotting out how I'm going to set it up now. Shame I missed that demo.

How does one prevent getting a "true pair" as opposed to a "bonded pair"? If they are of different size, won't the larger be female and the smaller male? Won't they breed since that is what they are 'programmed' to do; continue the species?

If you have a bonded pair and want a mated pair, what do you need to do to get this? I have a pair of false percs that were "bonded' in one form or another right from the LFS; I even bought the carpet they were in! I would love to see these two breed in the near future. I'm not sure on the age, but they have been together, sleeping in their carpet at night, for almost a year now.

Sorry to hijack, but the whole "bonded" and/or "true" confused me.

You arent hijacking at all, and you have a beautiful pair of percs! You would think that a pair would mate, but from what I have been told, they are picky and will not simply mate with anyone, they have to have that "click" Maybe some more knowledgeable clown people will break in and explain.

Most clowns will "bond and pair off" but they may not actually breed. Even if you buy a "true breeding pair" which is nearly impossible as anything can disrupt there breeding, they may not breed in the tank you prepare for them ever.

I wanted to pair my maroon with another, she was large enought to know that she was now a female, and I had a friend at my local fish store show me one to get that was small enough that it should have been fine, well she attacked him right off and I had to get him out of there ASAP! I guess she wont be getting a mate because I am afraid of her hurting another one. She is beautiful though, I think she is the prettiest maroon I have ever seen. I've got to get those pictures up!

When they pair though, it looks like they are attacking one another. They do the "open mouth charge", where they open their mouths, then ram each other with their faces. I noticed that my sole female clown was (what I thought) carrying eggs. Her stomach grew very large, and when she went to the top of the tank, I could see little black things in her belly. Well, I went out, and bought a male hoping hewould fertilize them if she did indeed lay eggs. Well, he ended up introducing ich/ick (whichever it is, lol) into my system, and they both died, along with a few other of my highly prized fish...:(

Well a day away. He is already hard at work cleaning. May have a clutch tomorrow.

I found a juvi cinnimon today at a LSF and put it on hold till I can get the one I have moved to the new tank. I'll take a shot at trying to pair later in the week.

I am setting up my 45 hex to be a clown tank. I want liverock only, with a nice anemonie, I would like to have about 4 clowns. Are the percs the only clowns that you can have in groups like that? I love the cinnimons. I have a maroon, but I know they are agressive, she stays in my 120.

4 in a tank that size is a little risky from what I've read. However, with that said the mated pair I have were in a 55 tank with a third juvi from the beginning I was told. It died during the move. I didn't replace it I figured they would replace it with in time with offspring. If your going to take the chance at doing that you would certainly want to make sure you got all juvi's and put them all in at one time. But, be ready for them to start fighting to establish who's mom who's dad and who the kids are. You would also stand a better chance with Ocellaris or Percula as they are the least aggressive.
