The 'help me hammer down my nitrate' thread...[Mature Tank with Problems]

Same here.
I'm on day 3 of Nopox. No thundering change yet, but I'll run a nitrate test before my next dose.

HOO-rah!!
We have gone from 100+ down to 50 with massive water changes, MarinePure block, ample live rock, vinegar dosing for 3 months, a sump clean-out, and Chemipure, but nothing was budging it down below 50 for long.

Three days of NoPox, and we are right about 25.

The resistence of this case (complicated by the need to dose Prime after invert and some fish death during an 8 day blackout) has been epic.

I'm dosing into the sump, once daily, and the corals are delighted. The candycane has been tight to its ribs and is starting, in however small a way, to puff up. The fish are doing well.
The only downside I'm seeing is a diminishing of pods and amphipods, but not an extinction.

That is great news! Now I'm itching to get mine in the mail! Doing a big water change tomorrow to help pull out some of this GHA and cyano.

I hope this holds up. I've tried all the above, singly and in combination and I've been fighting it since November. Each time I'd succeed in getting slightly less fuschia in the water color---but it'd start to climb again over time.

Now it's pale pink. I haven't EVER gotten it that low, not since November's disaster.

I dosed 18ml of NoPox in my 150g tall (+29g sump) and woke up to a cloudy tank. I'm assuming it's because I'd been dosing vinegar previously and the combination led to bacterial bloom. In going to wait for the water to clear before I try again.

Put in my first dosage of 3ml in my 28g nano. Water is cloudy. I really don't mind much as long as it does its job the next 10 days!

Personally, I changed because all the anecdotal evidence seems to point to NoPox being more effective.

My water cleared the next day and I have resumed dosing 7.5 ml twice a day. No problems with cloudiness.

Kevin21, I have read concerns about the bacteria using up the oxygen in the water, so maybe lower the dose a little bit?

I built this thing to control nitrate. Now my nitrate is about 2 ppm. Used to be over 80ppm. Vodka injected into it, bacteria is working overtime consuming nitrate. Small foot print as i don't have the space for refugium. Not a coil method by the way.

P/s - pretend you didn't see the coffee strainer

I stopped the vinegar because the vinegar was not working, and I ordered the NoPox, reading that one shouldn't do both. So I figured a little separation between the two modes of treatment might be a good thing.

I know it's only been a few more days, Sk8r, but do you have any updates on your nitrates? :bounce2:

update: started NoPox on 3/17. It's now 5/2, and nitrates are under 20, down from 'off the charts'. MUCH happier tank! The product works!

Yep. THis whole mess started in an 8 day no-generator blackout and chilldown. Saved the tank, but part of the ecology (including a massive cheato ball in the sump) had suffered collapse and dieoff, plus treatment with Prime, which presents its own problems in getting an accurate reading. Been fighting the situation since November, and rebuilding the microlife.
