Thanks D. . What would you use to anchor it to the end cap?

you can coat the end of the rod with some glue so it'll fit. That's what I did to the stainless stell rods.

-EDIT- Or teflon tape :)

I saw you guys talking about doing large mods and thought you'd like to see this. This is a Mag 18 modified for a 1000 gallon shark tank. Estimated flow is around 15,000 gph.

And here is that one and another larger Mag 18 mod in a 120 gl tank(the smaller mod is off). The larger mod in the rear is actually pushing a peice of LR up the opposite wall. I modified the larger for a 20,000 gallon reef tank. Estimated flow around 20,000 gph.

The pvc pipe on top is a part of the clamp/hanger.

Well no more problems with not reversing (as far as I can tell). Still having frequent non start of the prop at turning on. It will start going fine with a nudge or two from my finger.
Here's what I did (my machining skills are non-existent so I wanted to use as little of those skills as possible): (1) I took an intake guard from an lfs and cut it down to size and widened the opening to fit onto the pump, the prop is a 1.5" from some other brand (did not worry to much about max efficiency since its on a mj1200 anyway); (2) my cross brace is a piece of pvc, its crude and too wide but I'll trim it down later to less restrict flow. Pics are in my gallery of I don't link corrrectly. Any ideas?

as MR. Burns would say, "EXCELLENT!"

dh, this mod is really catching on. maybe the more people that start doing this the lower the prices on other stuff will get, ehh Tunze, but more importantly, maybe someone will come out with a controller for these things

Perhaps your rigid tube is too long and the prop is getting caught on the stopper? Try shorten it just a bit like 1/8" off or so.

Also I can't tell very well from the pics but your inlet slots are rather narrow. I'm almost suspicious that it's not allowing sufficient water into the inlet in order for the prop to spin properly.

I should add that if it is a non-start, then I have to nudge the prop or it will not go.

Definitely shorten down your rigid tube a bit.

Hehe that would be nice :)

I'm hoping that one or more manaufacturers will jump on the bandwagon (Aquarium Systems even, afterall who's better to mod the Maxijet than the manufacturer of the Maxijet) and start producing more affordable propeller pumps. I really do think the days of the $300plus stream pumps are numbered.

Shortened the rigid tube with significant improvement in nonstarts but still having about 1/20 failures. It does not seem to be hitting the stopper. I can move the prop assembly up or down and it won't make it go. Only corrects if I rotate the prop assembly manually. The prop assembly seems to spin ok when disassembled. Also water restriction does not seem to be limiting as it will run indefinitely after a successful start. Your help is really appreciated!!!
