Yes, there is always a know it all with deep pockets everywhere. It is human nature to pretend you know something, or try to teach something to someone else (even though you are a novice), but the fact of the matter is they like to teach stuff they heard from others instead of actually experiencing and accomplishing the stuff they preach.
Novices preach because they are insecure. It gives them a blanket of security to be in control. People like to be in control. I am in no way an expert in the reef hobby, but I do have many experiences in life. (serving in the military and going to war, traveling the world, learning new cultures, moving to Southeast asia, etc.)
For example (off topic), my other hobby martial arts. I have been studying martial arts for over 20+ years, and it just humors me to see new novices come into the martial arts acting as though they are experts with a few months of experience by stroking their ego all the time. They then try to teach other beginners something at the gym as though they run the gym. These people don't last long at the gym because they are too self centered, they rarely improve because they think they know it all. They are there for a few months but less then one year. this cycle continues with new students all the time, rinse and repeat. I like this quote "the difference between a black belt and a white belt student, is that the black belt student never quit" same goes to reefing IMHO.
Over the years I have come to the conclusion that being humble is the only way to improve yourself. You always strive to learn something new everyday to better yourself.
